You don’t have to spend long at the Challenge Games to understand why people keep coming back.

What stood out most wasn’t any one event or result. It was the atmosphere.

Students giving everything a go. Volunteers cheering them on. Teachers celebrating every achievement. Smiles everywhere you looked.

It was welcoming, inclusive and full of genuine encouragement. A reminder of just how powerful sport can be when everyone is given the opportunity to participate.

Hurst Site Operations Manager Matt Flanagan volunteered across both days. As he put it:

“There’s no better feeling than seeing people who face so many challenges achieve so much across such a wide range of events. Many people would be apprehensive about having a go, but every competitor over the two days was fearless in wheelchair rugby and left with a smile, proud of what they had achieved.”

Thank you to the The Challenge Games organisers, volunteers, schools and families for creating an event that leaves such a lasting impression.

Before we could build up, we had to go six metres down.

Beneath what is now Wulguru Steel Workshops Stage 1 sat a legacy of uncontrolled fill, including concrete waste, rubble and large voids.

Creating a suitable foundation for the new facility meant excavating approximately 28,000m³ of material, reaching depths of up to six metres in some areas. The material was stockpiled, regraded and reused as controlled fill before construction could progress.

What now stands above it is a 9,360m² purpose-built manufacturing facility, delivered ahead of schedule, within budget and defect-free.

Sometimes, the biggest part of a build is the part you never see.

It’s official… Padlock Pam has hung up the keys 🔑

After leaving her mark on just about every corner of Hurst, Pam has officially headed into retirement.

Although anyone who knows Pam would know retirement probably won’t involve much sitting still.

Pam has never been someone who stayed in one lane. Whether it’s been compliance and WHS, organising the office, sorting out a storage shed, fixing something around site or arriving with another hand drawn office plan, she has always found something that needed doing.

No job was ever really outside Pam’s job description. Keeper of the keys and never one to walk past something that needed doing, Pam has always been someone you’d find wherever she was needed.

From adding the little touches around the office, to looking after the gardens, Pam has always cared about making Hurst a place people enjoy coming to.

Always busy, always onto the next thing and usually calling someone “Poss” or “Possum” along the way, Pam’s vibrant energy and care for the people and places around her has always been shown in everything she does.

Pam, thank you for everything you have done for Hurst over the years.

The office definitely won’t be the same without you.

Enjoy retirement... although we have a feeling your garden, your reno projects and whatever you take on next will keep you plenty busy.

You will be missed.

They're a chance to continue relationships built over years of working together.

We're proud to be back on site at Sun Metals, delivering another project in one of North Queensland's most significant industrial operations.

Having worked here before, our team understands the environment and what's required to deliver work safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption.

More than a decade ago, The Taphouse existed only as a series of architectural concepts and design renders.

In 2015, those concepts became reality.

Looking back today, what stands out is how closely the finished project reflects the original vision.

Building in North Queensland isn't the same as building in Brisbane.

On paper, projects can look very similar.

The reality on site is often very different.

In North Queensland, weather, freight and distance can influence a project long before construction begins.

These aren't occasional challenges. They're everyday realities.

That's why local knowledge can make the difference between a project that runs smoothly and one that doesn't.

Not just understanding the project, but understanding the region, the people, the supply chains and the conditions that shape delivery.

At Hurst Constructions QLD, North Queensland isn't a market we fly into.

It's where we work, where our relationships are built and where our team delivers every day.

When your kids grow up in the same community you’re building in, shortcuts don’t make much sense.

That’s one of the biggest differences with local builders.

For us, these projects aren’t just another job before moving onto the next region. The schools, retail centres, industrial facilities and community spaces being built across North Queensland become part of the places our own families live and grow up in too.

They’re the places we visit on weekends. The cafés and retailers we take our kids to. The schools local families rely on. The facilities the community continues using long after construction is finished.

That creates a different level of accountability.

You care more about the long-term outcome. About doing what you said you would do. About maintaining relationships. About handing over projects you’re genuinely proud to put your name to.

Because in regional communities, reputation is built over time. People remember who communicated well, who solved problems properly and who delivered when it counted.

MICHELLE BROOKE | PROJECT ADMINISTRATION MANAGER

Specialises in: Commercial and Industrial

Why we have her: Michelle is a steady hand across both project administration and accounts. Quietly spoken and highly reliable, she’s someone the team leans on to keep things accurate, consistent, and under control.
With a strong understanding of both the industry and local market, Michelle brings a level of detail that doesn’t miss much. She has a knack for picking up discrepancies early and making sure things are right before they become a problem, which makes a real difference behind the scenes.

Off the clock:
Outside of work, Michelle is just as disciplined. A competitive athlete, she completed her 7th Head of the Yarra in 2024, an 8km rowing event through Melbourne, with her crew charging from 13th to finish 3rd.

These days you’re more likely to find her in the garden with her dogs or at the gym. She’s also known for her seriously good salads, though she’d be the last to say it herself. Competitive by nature, that mindset still shows up in everything she does.
