If you own a boat, large or small, protecting your electrical and electronics systems from water 💦 ingress is extremely important.

We are currently working with a customer to carry out some repairs on a boat and the photos below are examples of what can happen when water or moisture get to electrical or electronic equipment.

The 240V GPO (general purpose outlet) got wet - not great 😳. The damage is clear. We’ll be replacing the GPO, checking the wiring and relocating it to a position that is away from any hatches and checking for any other concerns to improve the electrical systems where possible.

The other photos are of a Victron Pheonix battery charger which also got wet but it was inside the boat under a sealed hatch that was used for storing drinks. The drinks were in cans, the cans rubbed together and resulting in cans splitting and the escaped fluid made its way into the battery charger.

So what are the lessons learned🤔

✅ Always try to place electrical equipment in a protected space away from openings and hatches if possible.

✅ Consider installing IP rated enclosures to protect electrical equipment and electronics.

✅ Perform maintenance which in some cases be as simple as doing visual inspections checking for any signs of damage that may lead to equipment failure.
