The VBA has prosecuted an individual over seriously defective plumbing work carried out by unlicensed and unregistered tradespeople at a property in Croydon.

Nigel Cawse has been fined $12,000 by a magistrate for allowing employees to undertake roofing (stormwater) work when not authorised to do so.

Cawse quoted almost $37,000 for the work, which was later found to be seriously defective with a repair bill of $45,000. He was also unlicensed and unregistered.

People undertaking building or plumbing work without the correct accreditation may not be qualified for the work they are carrying out – potentially leading to costly repairs or safety issues.

For plumbing work over $750 and for building work over $10,000, always check a practitioner is listed on the VBA website before you hire them – don’t just take their word for it.

Certain types of plumbing work such as water connections, gas fitting, roofing (stormwater) and underground drainage also require the right license in addition to VBA registration.
