Hybrid-Ag

Hybrid-Ag Optimising Inputs. Maximising Outcomes. Combining over 150 years of global research about the science of soil and plant health.

Hybrid-Ag was established in 2002 with the sole purpose of increasing food nutrient density through prescription blended soil and plant nutrition. With our knowledge of plant and soil science rooted in physics and chemistry, we understand crops and food grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than the varieties most of us get today. We also know that testing, not guessing, and

applying only what the soil and plants require increases profitability for growers. Today, we continue to work with growers, agronomists and consumers to educate them about the true understanding of food nutrient density. We help them apply science-based management tools, with the vision to transform food quality as we know it today.

Maximise bud burst. Start before bloom.

Flowering is a handover—not a single moment. By the time petals open, bud condition, reserve position, crop balance and block conditions are already shaping the job.

A practical flowering sequence is:

- Readiness: establish what the crop is carrying into flowering.

- Diagnose: define Position (where the crop is now), Pattern (what helped shape it) and Plan (what needs to happen next).

- Decide: read carry-in context, nutrient function, delivery pathway and conditions together—then match need × source × timing.

- Verify: inspect the response and, where DSA adds value, repeat paired young- and old-leaf sampling under a consistent protocol at meaningful crop stages.

Differential Sap Analysis compares samples from young but fully developed leaves with the oldest still-vital leaves. One paired result is a point-in-time read; repeating the protocol over time can add context.

A difference between leaf positions is not automatically good or bad. Read each pair with crop stage, conditions, current program and the relevant reference range.

We haven’t shared one of these deeper agronomy breakdowns for a while. We’re bringing them back.

Over the coming posts, we’ll unpack practical agronomy across different crops and production systems: what to look for, why it matters and how the evidence changes the plan.

First up: frost readiness.

A forecast tells you the event is coming. It does not tell you what the crop is carrying into it. The final forecast window matters, but it cannot rebuild the crop’s foundation.

Before choosing a response, read the crop’s starting position: crop stage, stored carbohydrates, nitrogen form, tissue integrity and osmotic balance.

Low reserves can limit what the final window can achieve. Tender, nitrate-led growth may call for restraint rather than another nitrate push. That crop read should determine where to support, where to hold back and what to inspect after thaw.

Where support is justified, match the source to the diagnosed need. Bring crop evidence, forecast and active frost controls into one plan. Nutrition can support readiness; it does not replace physical protection.

After thaw, inspect buds, flowers and young fruit before adjusting the plan.

If the crop read suggests a role for nutrition, your Hybrid Ag agronomist can help determine whether Frost-Ex belongs in the wider frost plan.

James White recently joined the Marcus Oldham Rural Leadership Program, connecting with passionate people from across Australian agriculture.

In this video, he shares the lessons that stayed with him and his vision for the future: enhancing human health by farming smarter, looking after our soils and reducing chemical use where we can.

It’s all part of a holistic approach to farming and creating positive change across Australian agriculture. 🌱

A big week across horticulture. 🍒🍎

Huge congratulations to Andrew Smith, our team leader and owner-operator at Smiths Fruit on being awarded the Industry Recognition Award at the National Cherry Industry Conference.

From the Cherry Growers Australia conference to Hort Connections, it was great to catch up with growers, take part in industry discussions, and visit a few orchards across the week.

Plenty of good conversations around crop nutrition, ag innovation and planning for the season ahead.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and had a chat with Andrew, Chelsea and Nathan.

We hope you get value from the Cherry Nutrition Playbook.

If you missed out on a copy or would like to learn more, get in touch with the Hybrid-Ag team.

See you at Table 21 today at the Cherry Growers Australia Conference — Adelaide Convention Centre 🍒

Andrew Smith and the Hybrid-Ag horticulture team will be there to answer your cherry nutrition questions.

Everyone who stops by our table will go in the draw to win a Kincrome toolkit, plus a Nutrient Audit. We also have a limited number of Cherry Nutrition Playbooks available — created with input from a grower, for growers.

Come and see us at the Cherry Growers Australia Conference — Table 21 🍒

Andrew Smith from Smiths Fruit and the Hybrid-Ag hort team will be there to answer your cherry nutrition questions and talk through how better testing, timing and data can support stronger seasonal decisions.

Andrew brings a grower’s perspective to the conversation — combining orchard experience, plant physiology and practical nutrition programs to help growers better understand what is happening in the tree, the soil and the season ahead.

Everyone who visits our table will go in the draw to win a Kincrome toolkit, plus we’ll have a free nutrient audit offer and a limited number of our Cherry Nutrition Playbook available — created with input from a grower, for growers.
