🏡Building a home is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, and after years of designing and constructing homes for families, we’ve seen a few common mistakes that homeowners often wish they could change later.
If we were building our own home, these are a few things we’d avoid:
📦A tiny pantry
It might seem like a good way to save space during design, but trust us, you will never hear someone say they wish they had less storage space. Between groceries, appliances, lunchboxes, and everything else that accumulates over the years, a well-sized pantry makes everyday living so much easier.
🗄️Not enough storage
One of the most overlooked aspects of a home design is storage. Seasonal decorations, sporting equipment, linen, cleaning supplies, kids’ toys, it will all need somewhere to go. Thoughtful storage solutions throughout the home can be the difference between a house that feels cluttered and one that feels organised.
☀️Poor orientation
A beautiful floor plan can quickly lose its appeal if the home isn’t positioned correctly on the block. Maximising natural light, capturing the winter sun, and creating comfortable living spaces year-round can have a huge impact on how your home feels to live in. Good design isn’t just about looks, it’s about lifestyle.
🔌Not enough power points
This is one of the most common pieces of feedback we hear from homeowners. Modern families have more devices, appliances, and technology than ever before. Adding extra power points during construction is relatively inexpensive, but adding them later can be far more difficult and costly.
The best homes aren’t just designed for today, they’re designed for how you’ll live in 5, 10, and 20 years time. Taking the time to think through these details during the planning stage can make a huge difference to your everyday life once you’ve moved in.
