Bit of an interesting one on this project ๐
The Blackbutt cladding and fascia had been pre-oiled in CUTEK, which is normally a perfect choice for protecting exterior timber.
However, the clients decided they wanted to change the look and go with Grimes & Sons Controlled Erosion Stain (CES) instead.
The challenge? Water-based CES and mineral-based CUTEK donโt get along.
After some testing with our cleaning system, we found we could successfully remove the existing CUTEK and get the timber back to a suitable surface for the CES.
From there, we applied 2 coats of CES in Natural Grey to achieve the new finish the clients were after.
๐ Check out the last 3 photos:

A good example of why surface preparation is everything when changing coating systems โ you canโt just put one product over another and hope for the best.
