Bit of an interesting one on this project 👇

The Blackbutt cladding and fascia had been pre-oiled in CUTEK, which is normally a perfect choice for protecting exterior timber.

However, the clients decided they wanted to change the look and go with Grimes & Sons Controlled Erosion Stain (CES) instead.

The challenge? Water-based CES and mineral-based CUTEK don’t get along.

After some testing with our cleaning system, we found we could successfully remove the existing CUTEK and get the timber back to a suitable surface for the CES.

From there, we applied 2 coats of CES in Natural Grey to achieve the new finish the clients were after.

A good example of why surface preparation is everything when changing coating systems — you can’t just put one product over another and hope for the best.

This large wrap around deck was coated in an oil that hid the spotted gum underneath it. The clients loved the look of timber and wanted to see it. Once cleaned, we brushed it all up and a few coats of CUTEK® Australia sela Brown was enough to bring it back to life.

Finished off this 900sqm deck. The largest we have done so far . With the walls done in pier grey our go to for spotted Gum decking was an easy choice in Smokey Grey. Close to 200L of oil went into this and once it soaks on will leave that natural gray timber finish.
Very happy to get this amazing project finished. 👌👌👌

Part 1 walls: One of our biggest projects to date, this absolutely amazing home on the Surfcoast with spotted Gum cladding and over 900sqm of spotted decking was in need of a refresh. The cladding was patchy and uneven from the sun and weather.
The clients liked the grey weathered look so after some sampling pier grey controlled erosion stain was chosen for the walls and Smokey grey for the decks.
It's critical to get clean timber when oiling so when you do, there are no barriers to stop the oil penetrating and also to get the best finish. Grimes oils grey it out but also let the natural features of the timber show through.
A few weeks of cleaning and just as long coating it's has come up exactly as expected.

This house classed in spotted gum was a few years old and was in need of a recoat. The initial coat of oil hadnt taken to the timber and went patchy.
We decided to remove all existing coatings and take it back to raw timber with a deep clean before deciding on coatings and colors. The owners decided on keeping a soft grey look rather than the deep reds and browns of spotted Gum so we decided on Smokey grey for the walls, black ash for the entry arbour and honeycomb for the upstairs deck to match the interior blackout floors.
The sun was shining for us on this project which we needed. 👌👌👌
