With more wet weather on the way, we are re-sharing some advice from March. We have installed many reflux valves since then!

During severe wet weather in Brisbane, some people have experienced drains back-flowing into their home

This means it could come up through your toilets, baths and sinks because the council sewer is under so much pressure the water has no choice but to come back up into your home!

Why does this happen?
When we have severe weather or localised flooding the council utilities have such an influx of water waste that it begins to travel back up into people's homes. Especially if they are low lying.

What can we do?
You can log this issue with your local council to ensure they are aware of the damage being caused by their infrastructure however in most cases you will need a reflux valve that will automatically shut when it detects that water is travelling the wrong way! In other words, it is your backflow prevention system.

Do your Flexi hoses look like this?

You should check your flexi-hoses regularly to avoid major leaks in your home. They can do some real damage. As a general rule they should be replaced every 5 years or so.

Another tip is make sure to turn your water off when you go away for longer periods. We've seen many clients return home to nasty flexi hose bursts.
