Grenville Street North is officially wrapped up.

This upgrade for the has transformed the streetscape with improved traffic flow, safer pedestrian and cyclist access, upgraded intersections, final asphalting and completed landscaping.

From excavation and in-house recycling of subgrade material through to the final asphalt, this project showcases our commitment to quality workmanship and sustainable construction practices.

A great result for the local community and surrounding businesses.

The Grenville Street North road reconstruction project, delivered on behalf of the City of Ballarat, is now officially open to traffic, right on time for the Christmas rush. The upgrade includes a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists, along with a revised angle-parking layout that has been relocated to the west side of the street, providing safer and more convenient access to local shops.

As part of the works, the existing subgrade was excavated and recycled. Material removed from site was transported to our recycling facility, where the rock was extracted, crushed and repurposed as Class 4 FCR for the new road subbase. This approach not only reduces construction costs by minimising the need for new raw materials but also supports a more sustainable, circular economy.

Our team will return in the new year to commence the next stage of works, including landscaping, final asphalting, and upgrades to the Shepperd and Field Street intersections

Our recycling yard crew are hard at work this week producing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP).

The process involves crushing and screening asphalt profilings sourced from asphalt contractors. The recovered asphalt is then returned to local contractors, including for reuse on road construction projects.

The larger-sized profilings are processed and sold as 20 mm recycled FCR. This material meets Class 3 specifications and is suitable for driveways, road shoulders and footpath bases.

Producing this material strengthens our ability to support a circular economy within the civil construction industry across the Ballarat region.

Our excavators are hard at work in our recycling facility this week, sorting steel extracted from crushed concrete, loading it onto trucks, and sending it off to local steel recyclers.

These aren’t just machines moving metal. They’re part of a smarter, circular process that:

• Diverts waste from landfill
• Recovers valuable resources
• Supports local industry
• Reduces carbon footprint

Every beam, bar, and bolt we reclaim helps build a more sustainable future, while keeping our operations lean, efficient, and economically sound.

We’re proud to announce the completion of one of Butler Excavations’ most significant and technically demanding projects to date.

Situated in the steep terrain of Lorne, this project involved constructing three large-scale 3-meter high retaining walls across tiered levels at the rear of three adjacent residential properties. The works were designed not only to mitigate pre-existing landslide risks but also to create flat, usable land in preparation for future residential development on each block.

The site posed significant challenges, such as dense vegetation, excavation through hard clay and rock, and limited access for machinery and trucks due to the steep natural site slope and the close proximity of existing dwellings on two of the properties. Nevertheless, the works were carried out to a high standard of engineering and quality, with safety consistently prioritised throughout the project.

Scope of Work Highlights:

• Clearing and grubbing resulting in the removal of 7 truck-and-trailer loads of green waste

• Excavation and disposal of over 3,400 m³ of fill material and 44 tons of concrete

• Supply and installation of 160 galvanized UC steel posts (100–200 mm wide, up to 7.2 m long), each placed in 450 mm diameter footings at depths of up to 3.5m

• Placement of approximately 100 m³ of structural concrete

• Installation of over 1,750 charcoal concrete sleepers (120 mm thick)

• New water supply and drainage infrastructure integrated into site works

• Carpentry works including 160 lineal meters of timber paling fencing, 140 lineal meters of timber balustrading for fall over protection, and staircase construction

• Landscaping to finalise and stabilise the site

This project demonstrates our capability in delivering complex earth retention solutions in sensitive and high-risk environments. If you’re planning a retaining wall installation—whether residential or commercial—reach out to Butler Excavations to ensure it's built right.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US
This week we are celebrating our 35th birthday.
We are so proud to be now one of the longest serving in civil construction in Ballarat. An amazing journey.
We thank our wonderful staff who have made this happen, to the endless amount of clients and colleagues who continue to be part of the growth that we have successfully achieved throughout these many years, and to the many suppliers in our town who have supported us along the way.
Our Gregory Street West site has been our home for over the past 15 years, and 35 years is a very long time in the trade.
We are so proud and grateful that our family owned business is now where it is today.
But most of all to our founder and Managing Director Tony Butler, who has been the pillar of Butler Excavations. What started out as a one man band with a truck and backhoe has now become a huge range of fleet, together with our recycling sector.
Congratulations to Butsy on reaching this almighty milestone in business. Cheers to Butsy! Cheers to Us!
