Dust control is so important.

When grinding concrete, silica-containing dust is generated, which is why effective dust extraction is critical. As you can see here, the grinder is working hard, but the vacuum is working even harder.

When the grinder is really mowing through the concrete and removing material quickly, sometimes it can outpace what the vacuum can capture. This leaves some of the heavier, generally non-respirable dust behind, so we follow along with a vacuum to ensure it’s cleaned up properly.

This particular slab is extremely hard, so choosing the right diamond grit and bond is key to maintaining production and achieving efficient grinding. Dean makes sure we have the right diamonds to get our jobs done.

Good grinding isn’t just about removing concrete — it’s about controlling dust, protecting operators, and delivering the best possible floor.

**Testing Out Something New 🔬**

We’re always looking for better ways to repair and restore concrete, so this week we trialled a new product for us — **Worx Plus Totally Repair Resin**.

This burnished concrete floor had a few small chips where it met the timber flooring, and we wanted a repair that would blend in seamlessly. First impressions? We’re impressed.

Like any new product, there were a few lessons learnt and we already know how we’ll refine the process next time, but the performance was excellent.

One thing that fascinated us was just how quickly it sets. We kept some of the leftover material in a cup to see what would happen. After about 5 minutes it suddenly went from a liquid to a solid in around 30 seconds. Watching it happen was pretty cool!

It’s always satisfying finding products that actually do what they promise, and we’re looking forward to putting this one to work on future repairs where it’s the right solution.

**How to Use Potassium Densifier Correctly**

One question that comes up regularly is:

*”Why are you walking on the concrete while applying densifier?”*

If you watch the video closely, you’ll notice we’re wearing clean, uncontaminated shoes (this is important).

You’ll notice that while we are walking on the floor, a wet shoe never steps onto untreated concrete. We always work within the already densified area to avoid contamination and ensure a consistent application.

For potassium densifier to work properly, it needs time to react with the concrete. This reaction typically takes 10–20 minutes. During this time, the surface must remain wet so the densifier can pe*****te and react effectively.

The process isn’t simply spraying it on and walking away.

The densifier needs to be continuously worked into the floor while keeping the surface wet at all times. As the concrete absorbs the product, you’ll eventually reach saturation.

**How do you know you’ve reached saturation?**

The floor turns into an ice-skating rink. It becomes extremely slippery, which is another reason why clean footwear and careful application are so important.

Once saturation has been achieved, any excess densifier should be removed. You don’t want product pooling on the surface because dried excess can be difficult to remove during the polishing stages and can create unnecessary headaches with your diamond tooling.

If you’re not taking the time to work the densifier into the concrete and keep it wet for the required reaction time, you’re not getting the full benefit of the product.

In fact, if you read the TDS on virtually any densifier, it will specify that the surface must be kept wet and the product worked into the floor for a set period without allowing puddles to form.

By following the correct process, we ensure the concrete is properly densified, hardened, and ready for the next stage of polishing.

🔨 Floor Preparation: The Part Nobody Sees, But Everyone Benefits From

Every successful floor starts with proper preparation.

This warehouse slab looked relatively straightforward at first glance, but close inspection uncovered dozens of dynabolts, threaded rods and old pe*******ons throughout the floor.

Before grinding could even begin, every fixing had to be located and either jackhammered out, cut flush, or hammered below the surface. Any one of these can destroy a set of diamonds in seconds if missed (learn this lesson too many times over the years).

Using our HTC 950 RX planetary grinder, HTC D60 dust extraction system, and Hilti demolition hammer, we systematically dealt with dynabolts and removed the existing coating, exposed clean concrete, and eliminated years of contamination from the surface.

Once the slab was properly prepared, every hole and pe*******on was patched, leaving a clean and consistent substrate ready for the next floor treatment.

Floor preparation isn’t the exciting part of the job, but it’s often the most important. Whether it’s polished concrete, epoxy, or another flooring system, the quality of the finished floor is directly related to the quality of the preparation beneath it.

This is the moment all the previous steps have been leading to.

After grinding, densifying and progressively refining the concrete surface, the final buff has revealed the true beauty of this burnished concrete floor. The natural variation within the concrete comes to life, creating a finish that is unique to this home and impossible to replicate.

What many people don’t realise is that the shine isn’t created by a coating. It comes from the refinement of the concrete itself. Each stage removes the scratches from the previous step, closes the surface and enhances the natural character of the slab.

The result is a durable, low-maintenance floor with a beautiful natural sheen that will continue to perform for years to come.
