ate’s agricultural sector to $10 billion a year by 2050. Since Tasmanian Irrigation was established in 2008, the Company has taken over management of a range of inherited assets, including dams, irrigation schemes and river works, constructed 15 new irrigation projects and advanced planning on a further five projects. By 2025, Tasmanian Irrigation will manage a portfolio of irrigation infrastructure valued at more than $680 million, capable of delivering 168,998 megalitres of water via 1,451 km of pipeline, 55 pump stations, 24 dams and three power stations. Business cases for a further five Tranche Three phase two projects will also be completed. All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum. The Company also works in partnership with irrigators to facilitate local community management of each irrigation scheme within the limits of the current legislative framework.

The $217.9 million Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme is fast approaching completion. More than 150km of the 152km of pipeline is now installed and the Poatina buffer dam is full. The Poatina pump station has also been completed and has commenced pumping water, enabling the pipelines to be filled and tested across the scheme. The two balance tanks are complete and the final works on the other two pump stations at Valleyfield and Epping Forest are being finalised. This means up to 25,500 megalitres will soon be flowing to farmers throughout the Northern Midlands area, ensuring they can plan, plant, harvest, employ and generate additional wealth for the region and our State. Thank you to farmers, contractors, Hydro Tasmania and all other stakeholders for their ongoing communication and collaboration to ensure the project is ready to deliver water in time for the 2026/27 irrigation season.

Tasmanian Irrigation is urging people to rethink, reduce and restore as part of today’s World Environment Day celebrations. The global campaign encourages citizens to rethink economic systems, reduce carbon emissions, and restore the balance between humans and nature. As part of Tasmanian Irrigation’s commitment to environmental excellence, we collect more than 9,000 water quality samples each year, have established aquatic habitat monitoring programs for vulnerable species, such as the giant freshwater crayfish and the green and gold frog, and undertake hydrometric flow monitoring. And we have Farm Water Access Plans, which guide the responsible use of irrigation water and help protect the long-term productivity and environmental values of irrigated farmland, as a cornerstone of our approach to sustainable irrigation.

Tasmanian Irrigation congratulates all students who participated in the 2026 Science and Engineering Challenge, aimed at inspiring students to consider STEM careers. Our Project Engineer Mohammed Al-Mohammed volunteered in Launceston and Burnie, overseeing science-based challenges that involved creativity, innovation, problem solving and teamwork. He said it was exciting to see students engage with hands-on and challenging activities, such as using a catapult to propel a plane as far as possible and to land on a specific target.

Mohammed is currently working as an engineer on the $217.9 million Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, which remains on track to deliver up to 25,500 megalitres of high surety irrigation water to farmers in time for the 2026/27 irrigation season. “From working with the Beacon Foundation to attending agricultural shows and field days, I will take any opportunity I can to speak to students about Tasmanian Irrigation, our new irrigation projects under development and the many career pathways available in the engineering and civil construction fields,” he said.

Tasmanian Irrigation is taking full advantage of this week’s rainfall, with water being harvested from rivers into our irrigation storages across multiple schemes — particularly in some of the drier parts of the state.

Our systems are designed to be flexible and responsive, allowing us to capture these opportunities as they arise and maximise the water available for irrigators. Early season harvesting like this helps us begin building storage levels over winter, positioning us well for the next summer irrigation season.

We’ve started harvesting into storages for the Southern Highlands, Lower South Esk, Swan and North Esk schemes. Other schemes with in-stream storages also saw excellent gains, especially for storages in the eastern half of the State.

With forecasts pointing to drier-than-average conditions ahead, making the most of rainfall events like this is more important than ever. Every opportunity to capture and store water now helps set our customers up for a stronger, more reliable season ahead.
