🚪📐 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 – 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗢𝘂𝘁! 📐🚪

One little detail can make a big difference to how naturally your new deck connects with your home - the transition through the door. 🏡

When we're planning a deck, we look at the existing floor level, doorways and where the finished deck height will sit.

Depending on your home and the design, there are a few different ways this can be handled 👇

🚪 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – Where suitable, bringing the deck closer to the internal floor level can create a really nice connection between inside and out.
🪜 𝗔 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 – Sometimes a step down from the doorway is the better option depending on the existing house and required clearances.
📐 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 – If there's a bigger height difference, the steps can become part of the deck design rather than feeling like an afterthought.
🏡 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗸 – On sloping sites or homes with different levels, sometimes the deck itself can be designed over more than one level.

There's no single answer that works for every home and things like drainage, clearances and the existing structure all need to be considered too. 👌

There can be plenty to work through beforehand - the design, materials, colours, budget, engineering and, depending on the project, approvals. 📐🏡

Starting the conversation earlier gives you time to work through all of that properly rather than trying to rush everything when you're ready to build.

But somehow 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 😂

🌭 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟭: The person cooking the BBQ is allowed to eat one sausage before everyone else.

🪑 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟮: Every outdoor area has one chair that's unofficially claimed by someone. Everyone knows whose it is. Nobody remembers when this was decided.

🍻 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟯: If someone gets up to grab themselves a drink, they are automatically responsible for asking everyone else if they want one too. 𝗡𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

🔥 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟰: Whoever lights the fire pit is now responsible for it for the entire night. You started it. It's your problem.

🧊 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟱: Sitting on the esky is perfectly acceptable outdoor furniture... right up until someone needs another drink.

🍖 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟲: The person at the BBQ will receive cooking advice from at least three people who have absolutely no intention of taking over.

🦟 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟳: The first person bitten by a mozzie is responsible for finding the Aeroguard for everyone else.

☀️ 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟴: If the weather's good enough, nobody is allowed to suggest going inside.

And finally...

😂 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟵: There is absolutely no such thing as “just a quick BBQ.”

🏠👀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴? 👀🏠

We’ve been having a bit of a look at what’s popping up in outdoor design lately and apparently 2026 is all about making the outdoors feel more like part of the home.

We had a scroll through what Houzz Australia, Home Beautiful and Real Estate have been talking about, and there are definitely a few common themes. 👇

🍳 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀 - not just a BBQ tucked in the corner anymore.
🛋️ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 - comfortable seating, dining areas and spaces designed to actually live in.
☀️ 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 - people want outdoor areas they can use for more than just the perfect sunny day.
💡 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 - rather than remembering it when everything else is finished.
🏡 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 - making inside and outside feel like they belong together.

And you know what?

𝗪𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆. 👌

They’re not really about following a particular “look” - they’re about making an outdoor area more comfortable, more useful and somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Of course, there’ll always be a few trends that look amazing on Instagram and disappear just as quickly... 😂

Before we start thinking about what could go where, we take in what’s already there -

🚪 Where you naturally come in and out
🪟 Doors and windows we need to work around
☀️ Which way the area faces and where the sun hits
💡 Existing electrical, water and other services
📐 Levels, heights and how everything will connect
🏡 How the new area will work with the existing home

And just as importantly, how you actually want to use the space once it’s finished.

Because you can build a great-looking deck or pergola...

But if it doesn’t work naturally with the house and the way you live in it, you’ve missed a pretty important part of the job.

Outdoor areas aren't always clean and tidy, especially if you've got kids, pets, a pool or a garden! 🐕🌿

When you're planning the area, think about where wet feet, muddy shoes, pool towels and dirty paws are actually going to come from.

Sometimes something as simple as the right access point, an outdoor tap or somewhere practical to leave shoes and towels can make the finished space much easier to live with.
