This is the middle of a switchboard upgrade in [suburb]. Old board gone, new one in, and now every circuit in the house has to come back to it one at a time.

That tangle of colour hanging out the side is every light, powerpoint, oven, aircon and hot water circuit in the place, waiting to be landed, labelled and tested.

By knock off it’s a tidy row of safety switches behind a closed door, and the owners will never think about it again. Which is sort of the whole point.

It’s not the most photogenic job we do. It’s probably the most important one.

Every January we get the same phone call. "It was fine last summer."

It usually wasn't. The signs were there, they just weren't bad enough to do anything about in October.

Here's what to watch for. It takes forever to cool the room, or never quite gets there on the really hot days. It's noisier than it used to be, or making a noise it didn't make last year. It's needed more than one repair in the last couple of years. And it's icing up, dripping, or cutting out on the hottest afternoons.

One of those on its own might just mean a service. Two or three together usually means the system is near the end, and you're much better off deciding that now than in the middle of a heatwave with a three week wait.

Either way we'd rather tell you it's got another summer in it than sell you something you don't need.

Every year it's the same. The first 38 degree day lands and the phone doesn't stop ringing.

By then, the people who sorted it in October are sitting comfortably, and everyone else is waiting weeks with a fan pointed at the couch.

Most people put off a switchboard upgrade because nobody has ever told them what actually happens on the day. So here it is.

We look at what's there now, what the house is running, and what you're planning to add later. A new kitchen, ducted aircon, an EV charger. That's what decides how the new board gets set up, so it's worth mentioning even if it's two years away.

On the day, your power is off for part of it. We tell you how long upfront so you can plan around it, and we work around the fridge and anything else that matters.

What you end up with is a board with safety switches on every circuit, room to grow, and labelling that means the next person isn't guessing.

Usually one day. Then you forget about it for the next 30 years.

What an awesome review!

These two young men are an asset to your company. Very happy with the result.

Eleanor had us out for abattery and solar install. [One real detail, like how long it had been plus some minor electircal work.

Nothing glamorous. Just the stuff that makes a house easier to live in, done properly and cleaned up afterwards.

That's most of what we do, honestly. The big jobs get the photos, but this is the day to day 🙌

This is what an install day actually looks like.

Wall unit up, pipework run and tidied, outdoor unit in, tested, and the room cooling by the afternoon. Most split system installs are done in a day and we clean up after ourselves like we were never there.

The reason we're posting it now rather than in January is simple. Right now there are install dates available and you get to pick one that suits you. Once the first 38 degree day lands, the phone doesn't stop and everyone is waiting weeks.

If there's a room in your house that nobody can sit in from December to March, this is the easy time to deal with it.

School's back. The house is quiet again. And that list you've been meaning to get to is still sitting there.

You know the one. The powerpoint hanging off the wall since the kids were little. The light in the hallway nobody can reach. The fan that's never worked properly. The outdoor light that's been dead for two years.

None of them are urgent, which is exactly why they never get done.
