One of the biggest regrets people have after building?

Not prioritising outdoor living enough.

Everyone goes all-in on the kitchen… then realise six months later they spend every weekend out here 😂

And honestly, it doesn’t need to be massive or ridiculously expensive to work well.

It’s more about creating somewhere people naturally gather.

Now that the weather is cooling down, a pizza oven, built-in seating, greenery, somewhere to sit around a fireplace with a drink while the kids run around… that’s the stuff people actually remember.

Not whether your splashback cost an extra 4 grand.

The best homes aren’t always the fanciest ones.

They’re the ones people genuinely enjoy living in.

EXPECTATION vs REALITY when building a custom home 👇

Expectation:
“We have a $700k budget, our plans are done, we’re ready to build.”

Reality:
The plans include architectural glazing, oversized voids, custom joinery, steel beams, complex roof lines, curved walls, high-end finishes, retaining, site costs… and suddenly the quotes are coming back hundreds of thousands over budget.

This happens more often than people think.

A lot of the time, clients are pricing a design they’ve fallen in love with — without anyone having properly explained what those design choices actually cost to build in today’s market.

And unfortunately, what looks incredible on paper doesn’t always align with the original budget.

That’s where the disconnect happens.

The reality is, certain design features dramatically increase build costs:
— Structural steel
— Large open spans
— Custom windows & glazing
— Double height voids
— Detailed cladding
— High-end finishes
— Sloping sites
— Complex engineering

None of these things are “wrong” — they just need to be considered early.

This is why involving a builder during the design stage is so important. A builder can help bridge the gap between the vision and the budget before too much time, money and emotion is invested into plans that may not be achievable.

Because the goal isn’t just to create a dream home on paper.
It’s to create one that can realistically be built.

One thing people don’t think about enough when building?

Whether they’ll still love the house in 10 years.

Seriously.

Because it’s easy to get caught up in trends, Pinterest saves and whatever everyone else is doing right now… but the homes that feel the best long term are usually the ones that feel calm, simple and well balanced.

Nothing overdone.
Nothing fighting for attention.
Just good design doing what it’s supposed to do.

This home is a good example of that.

Soft curves, warm textures, natural light and materials that won’t date the second trends change again.

Because building a custom home should feel exciting now… but it should still feel right years later too.

Meet the newest member of the Ryder Built team.

We’re proud to welcome Anthony to site. Straight into framing duties and already acting like he owns the place.

He assured us he’s here to “help working Australians”… which is great because we’ve currently got him carrying LVLs, sweeping sawdust and chasing the apprentice for the nail gun.

The only issue so far is he’s negotiated himself smoko breaks every 17 minutes and somehow managed to claim 47% of the profits while contributing one crooked wall frame and a coffee order nobody asked for.

Still, he keeps telling us he’s a man of his word, so we’re feeling optimistic.

Big things ahead for Ryder Built.(As long as Albo doesn’t put the frame out of plum.) 😂🔨

Now let’s hope Luke doesn’t see this too quickly and have me pull it down 😂😂😂 I couldn’t resist jumping on this trend

Natural light hitting just right… Hallelujah
Entertaining friends… Hallelujah
Friday nights at home… Hallelujah
Everything about it… Hallelujah
A home that feels as good on a busy Tuesday as it does on a weekend…

That’s the goal.

Not just something that looks good for photos — something that actually lives well.

Minimal kitchens are having a moment — but they only work if they’re done properly.

Because stripping everything back is the easy part… making it functional is where most people get caught.

This kitchen works because the details have been properly considered.

The low splashback keeps it clean without breaking up the space, the Venetian plaster brings in warmth (so it doesn’t feel flat), and the rangehood becomes a feature instead of something we’re trying to hide.

And behind all of that? Storage that makes sense for real life.

So yes — it looks minimal.

But it still works like a proper, everyday kitchen… not just one that photographs well.

Because a “pretty” kitchen that drives you mad? Not worth it.

This is your sign to stop underestimating the parent retreat 👀

Because this space? It’s not just a bedroom… it’s where you hide from your kids for 5 minutes of peace 😂

We designed this one to feel like a calming retreat — soft curves, no harsh lines, and storage that actually works (yes, even for the “I’ll just throw it here for now” pile).

The open shelving keeps your everyday pieces within reach, while everything else disappears behind clean cabinetry. Then you walk through that arch… and straight into a proper wind-down zone.

Freestanding round bath, soft textures from the natural stone, warm tones and calm green feature basins — the kind of space that makes you want to slow down (or at least pretend you have time to).

If you’re building, don’t treat this as an afterthought. This is one of the hardest working spaces in the home.

And yes — it also doubles as a pretty good hiding spot when the kids are being feral 😂

This laundry proves that functional spaces can still feel beautifully considered.

A checker pattern of natural stone tiles brings a soft Mediterranean feel, adding warmth and texture to what is often an overlooked zone.

With a powder room tucked just off to the side, a mudroom upon entry and a direct door leading out to the alfresco and pool area, this layout is all about practicality—perfect for rinsing off after a swim and ease of access to a bathroom without those wet footprints through the house or handling the day-to-day chaos with ease.

Simple, seamless, and designed for real living.

Let’s work together to build a beautiful and functional home that is made FOR YOU!

Are Jack & Jill bathrooms making a comeback? We think so and here’s why we incorporated one in our latest project. 🤍

Connecting two bedrooms, this layout was ideal for the kids’ zone, giving each room direct access to a shared bathroom without needing to step into the hallway. It was designed to streamline those busy morning and bedtime routines, while still offering a sense of independence as the children grow.

It’s not for everyone—and that’s okay. Shared spaces can take a bit more coordination—but when designed well, the benefits really shine. In this home, with only the master and kids’ bedrooms upstairs, it made perfect sense to create a connected, functional space for everyday use, while keeping a separate guest bedroom and ensuite downstairs as a calm retreat away from the chaos.

Soft, neutral tones and layered textures elevate the space, proving that practical design can still feel warm, calm, and considered.

Let us know your thoughts - we would love to hear from you. Do you think Jack and Jill bathrooms should make a comeback?

What could have easily been an awkward, unused corner has become one of the most inviting spaces in the home.

With careful planning, this area has been transformed into a relaxed outdoor retreat. It’s somewhere to unwind with a wine or beer in hand, entertain family and friends and simply enjoy year-round. A wood fire pizza oven anchors the space, paired with a fire pit and built-in seating that naturally draws people in.

Positioned to connect seamlessly with the pool and alfresco on the other side of the home, it creates a natural flow between spaces—meaning pizza night can be shared effortlessly with family and friends relaxing by the pool.

Travertine pavers, soft grass surrounds, and lush planting bring warmth and texture, making it feel both grounded and inviting.

A perfect example of how thoughtful design can turn a forgotten corner into the heart of the home.

Do you think this is a space you could see yourself enjoying? Let us know.
