Nature’s own plant breeders 🌺

Ever wondered where some of the most striking heliconias come from? Many are hybrids: the result of two different species crossing.
In their native tropics, hummingbirds are the main pollinators. Each plant only offers nectar from a few flowers at a time, so the birds move from plant to plant, carrying pollen as they go.

When two different heliconia species grow close together, that pollen can cross between them. The seed that follows can grow into a brand-new plant that blends the colour and form of both parents.

🔸 H. bihai × H. caribaea, ‘Orange Delight’: golden yellow meets deep red to give glowing orange.
🔸 H. episcopalis × H. standleyi, ‘Flabellata’: a fan of pink, red and gold bracts.
🔸 H. imbricata × H. latispatha: tight crimson bracts meet open, fiery spikes.

Here in Australia we don’t have hummingbirds, so honeyeaters and insects step in as pollinators. Seed set is less common here, which makes a garden cross a real treat to find.

The last photo shows a heliconia flowering in my garden now.

Those layered red and gold bracts are pure tropical drama, and a reminder of what happens when nature mixes the palette.

Planning a tropical garden? We love designing with heliconias for colour, height and that lush, layered look.

Storm season is here – is your garden ready? ⛈️

Heavy rain can cause plenty of damage in a garden that isn’t prepared. A little work before the storms roll in goes a long way. Here are our top 5 tips:

1️⃣ Keep the lawn short. Shorter grass lets water run off the property instead of sitting and pooling.

2️⃣ Feed your gardens. Fertilise beforehand so your plants are strong and ready to grow.

3️⃣ Clear the drains. Remove leaves and debris from drains and grates so the water has somewhere to go.

4️⃣ Lower the pool. Backwash your pool down to a level where it won’t overflow in a downpour.

5️⃣ Mulch afterwards. Once the rain clears, top up your mulch to protect the soil and lock in moisture.

From building site to tropical retreat… coming soon! 🌴

This project is in its design stage right now.

Behind the new block wall is a bare bed between a brand new pool and the driveway, and here’s the plan for it.

Our design layers palms, bold foliage and splashes of orange and red flowers to frame the pool, soften the wall and handle the hot western sun. The drawing shows how it will look about three years after planting.

Stay tuned for the after shots in a few weeks! 👀

Got a new pool, new build or tired garden that needs a plan? We’d love to help.
