Rocks in your pond are not just for looks. They are doing some of the most important work in the entire system ๐ชจ๐ง๐ฟ
This is one of Patrick's favourite things to explain because the answer always surprises people. A bare liner pond might seem easier to maintain on the surface but without a stone layer on the floor there is no habitat for beneficial bacteria to colonise. No bacteria means no processing of organic material. No processing means sludge. Sludge means nutrients. Nutrients mean algae.
The stone layer changes all of that. Water moves constantly across every surface, bacteria colonise every inch of it and organic material gets consumed at the source before it ever becomes a problem. Patrick shows it in this clip by picking up a handful of pebble from the pond floor. Clean, clear and alive with biological activity.
This is what an Aquascape ecosystem pond looks like from the bottom up. Every element working together. Plants, fish, bacteria and the habitat they need to keep the whole system naturally balanced ๐ฟ๐ง
