Maidenhair Tree Garden

Addarc Architects undertook a contemporising facelift of this North Caulfield property, and we were engaged for the design of the garden.

Our lovely clients initially wanted to retain some aspects of the “old” garden. When we explained what was possible with a completely clean slate, they entrusted us with a full redesign.

This is the great Aloe ‘Mighty Coral’ that is drought tolerant beyond compare.

The ‘Mighty’ in the moniker refers to its resilience rather than size. In possession of a most useful tidy and compact, this plant is a great option for so many gardens. Pots, patios, courtyard gardens and larger landscapes alike.

Here it is planted amongst Lomandra conferifolia ‘Crackerjack’ on the dry western side of an evergreen cedar. Aloe ‘Mighty Coral’ excels where the Lomandra cannot.

And better still, the honeyeaters (and possibly the corgis) love them too.

Many thanks to Chris and Monica for this great cultivar.

Game, anyone?

There are many winning combinations when it comes to plant screening on mesh. This pairing of maidenhair vine and chocolate vine on cyclone fencing was planted more than 10 years ago and after a hard prune last year is looking better than ever.

The wiry and moody Muelenbeckia complex accentuates the heavenly foliage of Akebia quinata. Even after the latter has dropped its leaves, the maidenhair creates a dependable screen, ensuring no public display of those double faults.

Rooftop garden designs are full of challenges. Loading and logistics are key factors in what is possible and what can be built.

This is a rooftop garden in the Melbourne CBD that we designed last year for our gorgeous clients, A & M who live on the 20th floor. They were keen to incorporate different spaces for lounging, dining and an outdoor cinema.

For this project, weight was no issue- but logistics were. And due to rules of the owners corporation we could not change the pavers so we needed to detract from the materiality underfoot.

Our clients are thrilled with the new outdoor terrace- and we are too. We are looking forward to calling back in the new year to see how this one is settling in.

The last photo was taken at the first site visit. Many people know that I’m fearful of heights... this was one of the few times that I stood so close to the balustrade 😂

Finally thank you for another great build Matt Butterworth and team
👏
