Civil engineering splits into several main branches that focus on different parts of the built environment:
* Structural Engineering: Analyzes and designs load-bearing systems like skyscrapers, towers, and bridges to ensure they stay safe, stable, and able to handle physical stress.
* Geotechnical Engineering: Studies the behavior of earth materials, soil, and rock to build strong foundations, retain walls, and stabilize slopes.
* Transportation Engineering: Plans, designs, and manages safe and efficient transit systems, including roads, highways, railways, airports, and public transit.
* Environmental Engineering: Combines science and engineering to control pollution, manage waste, treat sewage, and improve water and air quality.
* Water Resources (or Hydraulic) Engineering: Manages the flow and storage of water by designing dams, canals, reservoirs, flood defenses, and water treatment systems.
