B-architecten

B-architecten We are designers of sustainable buildings that enhance both the urban and the open space.

Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten. The three architects met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. It was at the internationally oriented Berlage Institute where it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office has expanded to three locations, Antwerp, Brussels

and Ghent. Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, the trio launched a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten – an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design. In 2020, B-city was launched as a B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts. In 2022, B reinforced itself with a fourth pillar: B-juxta, the division of B that dedicates itself to restoration and renovation projects. B-juxta evolved from the Ghent-based Juxta, which has its roots in Architectenbureau Van Acker – later Avapartners. Since its establishment in 1967, the office grew into an important player in Flanders in the field of restoration, renovation and reallocation of architectural heritage and continues to live on today as part of B. With B-juxta came the third operating base: a stately townhouse in Ghent's so-called 'millionaires quarter' that exudes history but where, inside, we work on the future. As such, today B operates from Belgium's three university capitals: Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. As a result, B has naturally grown into an office of more than 100 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.

(New images) A shared landscape to live and meet: Cirk is now complete.

What was once a cluster of existing buildings has become a small residential ecosystem: 16 homes, 5 assisted living studios, a neighbourhood house and coworking space, all organised around a collective garden.

Three renovated buildings and two new volumes form a clear but layered composition, bringing together a wide mix of housing types — from compact studios to family homes.

At the centre: landscape. An orchard, swimming pond and shared gardens define the rhythm of everyday life. Private terraces extend each home, while collective spaces support everything in between: from working and gardening to hosting, repairing or simply being together.

A car-free site allows the landscape to take the lead. Mobility, parking and storage are absorbed quietly into the edges and underground.

The existing buildings were preserved and upgraded. The new volumes sit alongside them as a contemporary echo — distinct, but part of the same family.

(From Antwerp to Cannes, seventy years later) Last September, we celebrated the opening of our B-cinema — a former movie theatre we transformed into part of our Antwerp headquarters. As part of the festivities, we hosted a special screening of the 1955 Antwerp cult film ‘Meeuwen sterven in de haven’, starring a young Julien Schoenaerts.

Today, we’re proud to share the next chapter of that story: thanks to the generosity of our guests and other supporters, the film could be digitally restored by CINEMATEK, ànd it has now been selected for Cannes Classics 2026 — seventy years after the film’s original selection at the Festival de Cannes.

‘Meeuwen sterven in de haven’ follows a tormented man wandering through the port city of Antwerp. The film is widely regarded as a landmark in Belgian cinema and as Julien Schoenaerts’ first major screen role.

Its return to Cannes carries particular significance: in 1956, the film became the first Belgian production ever selected for the official competition of the Festival de Cannes, where it received the Grand Prix award.

We feel honoured to have contributed, in our own way, to the preservation and renewed visibility of this remarkable piece of Belgian cinematic heritage.

(In the running) A shared landscape for living

Cohousing project Meeren has been selected for the longlist of the Architectura Awards’ first edition, in the category of collective housing — a first milestone for a project centred on living together.

Set on a one-hectare green domain in Olen, Meeren brings together eight nearly energy-neutral homes around a renovated Kempen barn that forms the social heart of the site. Private gardens open onto a shared landscape with a play area, swimming pond and vegetable garden, while the barn hosts spaces for gathering and working — from a communal kitchen to a coworking space and sauna.

Rather than a collection of individual houses, Meeren explores a balance between privacy and community, embedded in a collective landscape.

(Project update) Construction is progressing steadily on the HELB school within the Brussels Mediapark, where the first major structural elements are now taking shape.

The first large-scale truss — spanning approximately 36 metres — has been successfully installed and will support levels 1 and 2 of the building. This marks an important step in the realisation of the project’s structural framework. A second truss, intended for the upper levels, is scheduled to be installed in the coming weeks, continuing the phased assembly on site.

Designed as more than a school, HELB will become an open and public environment for film, photography and media. At ground level, a vibrant, collective space will bring together auditoria, screening rooms, a cafeteria and media libraries, fostering exchange between students, makers and visitors. Below ground, film and audio studios are carefully embedded to ensure optimal acoustic and light conditions.

As construction advances, the building gradually reveals its role as an active interface within the Mediapark — a place where education, production and public life intersect.

(Project completed — 10 years on)

Just around the corner from our main office in Borgerhout, we completed the Scoutshuis a decade ago.

The transformation of a former office building into a shared house for Scouts and Gidsen Vlaanderen brought together workspaces, a youth hostel and collective facilities within a clear and adaptable structure.

A brief look back!

(We’re growing — beyond architecture)

B is expanding, and we’re looking beyond architects alone. From finance to project leadership to the daily rhythm of our office, we’re opening up new roles for people who keep things running, growing and evolving behind the scenes.

We are currently looking for:

• A head of finance to coordinate and strengthen the financial strategy across all B-entities (Antwerp office)
• A financial project manager to guide and safeguard the financial performance of B-architecten projects (Antwerp office)
• An all-round administrative officer to keep our office running smoothly, from invoicing to office management (Antwerp office)
• A project leader to join our Ghent team, leading architectural projects from concept to completion
• … and two additional architectural positions across our practice

What’s in it for you?
At B, you won’t find rigid hierarchies or fixed paths — but autonomy, trust and collaboration. We’re not a traditional architecture office, and we don’t aim to become one. Alongside a competitive and transparent salary package, we offer flexible working hours, green mobility options, and a strong focus on well-being.

We’re looking for people who take ownership, think ahead, and enjoy working in teams — whether you operate through numbers, organisation or design.

(Project update) The redevelopment of the former ISA site in Temse into an open, mixed residential neighbourhood has been officially launched — accompanied by a new series of project images.

Our design opens up a previously enclosed inner block and reconnects it to the surrounding streets and urban fabric. The historic abbey and chapel are retained as spatial anchors within the plan, while new volumes are organised around squares, courtyards and car-free passages. A new public square at the edge of the site establishes a clear transition towards the commercial centre.

Conceived as a neighbourhood that brings together housing and ground-floor amenities, Gustave is designed as an act of connection — between old and new, heritage and contemporary living, residence and town.

(Proud to be nominated) Yesterday, the Belgian Architectural Excellence Awards ceremony took place in Brussels. B was nominated for the Flemish Region Award, alongside a strong and inspiring group of practices.

The BAEXA highlight the role of architecture in shaping spatial quality, sustainability and the public realm. To be part of this carefully curated selection is a valuable recognition of our work.

For our office, the nomination reflects a long-term commitment to architecture as a cultural and societal practice — built over 30 years of projects across Belgium and beyond, at all scales and in diverse contexts.

We warmly congratulate the laureate and thank the organisers and jury for this acknowledgement.
