It is with sadness, that we inform you about the passing of our dear colleague Rien van der Spek on Sunday the 25th of January, 2026.

We remember Rien for his long lasting and very motivated commitment to ELCA. In his time as President of the Dutch association Royal VHG, he was already actively involved in the work of our Presidium. Between 2021 and 2024 he was member of our Board.

Rien brought in his well appreciated practical approach, overview, and calmness. He was convinced about the European cooperation in ELCA in which we together developed our sector, companies, and ourselves. During the professional excursions of the ELCA Committee of Firms, Rien was keen on sharing his impressive knowledge and experiences with others. It was always a pleasure to be with him and to exchange with him. We will miss him a lot.

Our thoughts are with his family and all who are dear to him.

ELCA is proud to recommend our national member, the Estonian Association of Landscape Contractors Eesti Maastikuehitajate Liit (EMEL), to the table of the Estonian Ministry of Climate.
EMEL is now taking an active role in shaping national nature restoration efforts, with a strong focus on urban greening.

This is a great example of how landscape professionals can contribute directly to the implementation of green policy through practical expertise and collaboration.

At ELCA, we firmly believe that our national members are key partners in delivering Europe’s green ambitions.
