We are happy to announce that Abby Kortrijk won a Henry van de Velde Award in the category ‘Spaces’.

Abby Kortrijk is an unconventional, playful, and accessible museum for visual arts. Through an innovative City Living concept, a distinctly participatory approach, and a thoughtful interplay between form and content, it explores what a museum today can and should be — for whom and by whom.

With a forward-thinking vision, Abby Kortrijk plays with concepts of art, heritage, and identity, aiming to break open the traditional framework of a museum — transforming it from a closed institution into an accessible space for broad artistic experience. This refreshing vision continues in the architecture, interior design, and overall experience of the new Abby Kortrijk, where centuries-old heritage today provides a beautiful and empowering stage for art, encounter, and togetherness.

Competition win Casino Kursaal Knokke-Heist.

Tab Architects in collaboration with Barozzi Veiga and Mosbach Paysagistes won the architecture competition for the renovation and extension of the Casino of Knokke-Heist to be transformed into a new cultural and leisure centre.
The proposal -accomodating an event space, an art hall, a nightclub, a casino, a restaurant and wine bar and a car park- is a confrontation between old and new. The ambition is to restore the overall cohesion of the existing building and to create a coherence with the new additions. The northern part of the Kursaal, with the glazed façade of the main hall, will be reconstructed according to the qualities of Leon Stynen’s initial design. On the south side, the new extension reinforces the existing architecture with a soft organic design, whose formal language integrates and respects the purity of the north side. The chaotic arrangement on the south side of the existing building is thoughtfully resolved by creating symmetry with the positioning of the art hall as a counterpart to the Magritte Hall. René Magritte’s mural ‘The Enchanted Realm’ becomes the central reference point in the new southern addition, which constitutes the link volume between the existing building and the new underground extension with the casino scene.
The architecture -with its play of metamorphosis, transformation and duplication- reads like the theme of Magritte’s work. The dichotomy between continuity with the existing and the desire for a new identity is translated into a single new volume with a poetic meaning for Knokke-Heist.

And suddenly cities all want a city living

In architectural discourse today, there is greater sensitivity to an in-between space that lends itself to public use. Experience matters there and you can encourage encounters. It makes no sense to create a public building that is not anchored in its local context. In Kortrijk, Tab Architects is working with Spanish firm Barozzi Veiga and Koplamp on Abby, a new exhibition space at the Groeninge Abbey

We are pleased to announce that Tab Architects together with DBLV architecten won the competition for the ‘Nieuw Gent’ social housing project.

The design is part of a larger masterplan and consists of 192 residential units in a first phase.
The challenge of the project is to balance between the large scale of the program and the introduction of a small-scale, recognizable coexistence structure for the residents. The identity of our architecture is determined by the specific location between city and park. The proposal aims to promote an active, dynamic and permeable residential neighbourhood and to connect the project with the park and its surroundings.
In this view, all dwellings have a two-side orientation as an important quality.
