Sharing skills and passion in Malawi. Crafting, teaching, inspiring…

10/04/2026

A European woodworking and upholstery expert, Clint Van Hoorebeeck, says he is impressed with quality products that Malawian carpenters are producing despite limited upholstery education and little international exposure.

Van Hoorebeeck told Zodiak Online today, that the talent and creativity for Malawian carpenters is amazing, and they have a potential to shake the global furniture industry if given better tools.

Hoorebeeck is in the country to train Fadeth employees on advanced finishing, joinery and quality control.

Managing Director of Fadeth Furnishers, Richard Chirwa, said they want Malawian furniture industry to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world, hence the decision to bring experts to train their employees to start producing international standard products.

Custom-made seating – from sketch to comfort

For this project, we created a bespoke 6-meter-long seating solution, carefully designed to fit both the space and the way it’s used. The layout brings together two distinct areas: a dining bench and a chaise longue by the window, offering a calm view of the water.

From the start, the focus was on balance - between aesthetics, functionality, and comfort.Because each zone serves a different purpose, we developed two types of seating comfort: firmer support for the dining area, and a softer, more relaxed feel for the lounge section.

The entire piece is upholstered in Aquaclean fabric by Aristide — a conscious choice, especially for the dining area, thanks to its durability and easy maintenance.

This project was a collaboration between Clint Stoffering, The Fabric & Bel Story Projects.

Do you have a renovation project in mind?Reach out early in the process so we can guide you from the first sketch and help achieve the best possible comfort.

I wanted a sign that felt like it truly belonged to my natural habitat - something that matched the character, the craft, and everything that happens behind the doors of my atelier. So we went for hand forged iron. Honest materials, shaped with intention and tradition.

The design mattered. The color mattered. A sign is the first whisper of what you’ll find inside - the tools, the textures, the slow making, the small stories… and yes, even my old dog wandering around the workshop.

And when you ask someone to create something, you have to trust their creative freedom. That’s how it went with Gert De Cuyper. We spent six hours sketching, refining, adjusting lines and proportions until it felt right. A true collaboration: his craftsmanship, my vision, and a shared love for pieces that carry soul.

The result? A sign that doesn’t just hang there, it belongs there. Can’t wait to show you more of what happens behind these doors.

The Lara Sofa from 1958, designed by Roberto Pamio, Noti Massari and Renato Toso for Stilwood, is a sculptural piece made of two interlocking elements. When this sofa arrived in my workshop, it was clear that it needed a careful and respectful restoration. Because the design relies heavily on its original foam structure, we began with extensive research. Replacing all the foam would mean recreating the piece rather than restoring it — something I’m fundamentally opposed to.

While removing the upholstery, we discovered that the sofa had been reupholstered in the past, but in a way that had compromised the foam. It had been cut into two separate parts, which made the restoration even more challenging. It required patience, precision and a thoughtful reconstruction to bring the original form back to life.

Fortunately, I didn’t take on this project alone. I had the support of my colleague  from Finland , who joined the workshop for two months. She not only assisted with this complex restoration but also helped train other assistants and interns, giving me the space to focus on the growth of the studio behind the scenes.

It has been an intense year, with the workshop gradually bursting at the seams. The projects keep getting bigger, and so does the responsibility — which means more hands are needed. I’m grateful to all colleagues, freelancers and interns who contributed over the past year. You make this work possible.

Finally, I want to thank my clients for their patience. As the studio continues to grow, waiting times for quotes and project scheduling have become longer. It takes trust to wait for craftsmanship, and I’m genuinely grateful to everyone who chooses to do so. Your patience allows me to approach each piece with the care and attention it deserves.
