How do the living costs compare? 💷💶

Bulgaria can offer considerably lower living costs, particularly when it comes to housing. Here’s what Numbeo’s 2026 comparison shows:

🏠 Rent: around 65% cheaper
🛒 Groceries: around 32% cheaper
🍽️ Eating out: around 42% cheaper
💡 Everyday living costs, excluding rent: around 39% cheaper
📊 Living costs including rent: around 46% cheaper

To put some actual prices beside those percentages, here are a few reported national averages:

🔑 One-bedroom flat outside the city centre, per month:
🇧🇬 €321 — approximately £274
🇬🇧 £823

💡 Monthly utilities for an 85 m² flat:
🇧🇬 €113 — approximately £97
🇬🇧 £241

🌐 Monthly home broadband:
🇧🇬 €12.40 — approximately £10.59
🇬🇧 £32.06

🍽️ A meal at an inexpensive restaurant:
🇧🇬 €10.23 — approximately £8.73
🇬🇧 £16

However, everything isn’t automatically cheaper! A litre of milk averages about £1.37 here, compared with £1.25 in the UK.

Wages matter too. Reported average monthly take-home pay is approximately €1,023 (£873) in Bulgaria, compared with £2,516 in the UK. Keeping a UK-level income or pension can therefore make a considerable difference to how affordable life feels.

These are broad, crowdsourced estimates. Village life, city living, renting and owning your home will all produce different budgets. Heating, repairs, healthcare and trips back to the UK also need to be factored in.

One of our favourite jobs at this time of year — our annual big batch of homemade Ratatouille! 🍅🍆🫑🥒
We’ve been making this for years, and there’s something really satisfying about seeing all those fresh vegetables chopped, bubbling away together and slowly turning into a rich, colourful pot of goodness. 😋
We made a huge batch this time, plenty to enjoy now and lots portioned up ready for the freezer. Perfect for those colder days when we want something homemade without having to start from scratch.
A lovely way to use up a good mix of seasonal vegetables too — courgettes, aubergines, peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes all coming together in one big pot. ❤️
We genuinely love making our big yearly batch… even if the chopping does feel never-ending! 😂🔪

🐾 Caught yet another mole! 😄

These little guys certainly keep me busy around the garden!

In this video I show you the mole safely in a tub before taking it for about a 10-minute walk up to a nearby field, where I released it well away from our garden. 🌿

I also show you the very handy mole trap I’ve been using, explain how it works, where I placed it and what I did to catch the mole.

So far it’s been a really simple and effective way of dealing with them without killing them — catch, relocate and hopefully convince them that our garden is no longer the best place to live! 😂
