The Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship wishes to inform retailers and the general public that it has taken note of the recent fuel price adjustments announced by the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA), effective 28 March 2026.
The Ministry acknowledges that the increase in fuel prices may exert upward pressure on the cost of goods and services. However, it is important to note that the current fuel price increase is largely driven by temporary external factors within the international oil market.
In this regard, the Ministry strongly urges all retailers across the country to exercise restraint and avoid increasing shelf prices of goods at this time.
Retailers are requested to apply a temporary fuel surcharge at the point of sale (till) in order to potect consumers from abrupt and widespread price increase, as well as ensure transparency in pricing. The application of the surcharge will be monitored.
The Government of Botswana is closely monitoring developments in the global oil market and their impact on the domestic economy. Appropriate measures will be taken as necessary to safeguard both businesses and consumers.
Retailers are reminded that any unjustified or excessive price increases may attract regulatory scrutiny in line with existing consumer protection frameworks.
The Ministry appreciates the cooperation of the business community in ensuring price stability and protecting the welfare of consumers during this period.
