Checkout this newly constructed garden suite with a meadow-like green roof installed over a topside vented low-sloped roof assembly. Green roofs provide insulation, absorbs rainwater, and help lower urban air temperatures.

Roof durability relies on sufficient cross venting details. The roof vents were integrated into perimeter curbs that retain the green roof system. The curbs allow potential pooling water in the plant medium to flow over the 6” perimeter curbs. This eliminated the need for emergency overflow scupper drains.

Q: Can you see the roof deck’s topside venting outlet? Where’s the vent curb? 💨

A: The venting detail extends up the roof deck side walls with 2x4’s on flat with openings in the plywood wall sheathing hidden behind furred out fascia board. This provides the cross ventilation needed to comply with the Building Code.

Did you know installing a semi-permeable self-adhered flashing membrane is suitable for use in window and door rough openings?

Based on testing and experimentation conducted by RDH Building Science, it was concluded that Wigluv tape can withstand long term ponding water on a window sill (monitored for 90 days).

Further testing concluded semi-permeable self-adhered flashing membranes allow wet substrates to dry faster than impermeable self-adhered flashing membranes. This improves the overall moisture durability of the wall assembly.

The weather resistive barrier / exterior air barrier installed is Majvest and Wigluv tape. These high-performance materials are durable and simplify building enclosure detailing.
