Alberta winters are no joke. And neither is choosing the wrong brick. ❄️🧱
Not all brick is created equal - and in a province with extreme freeze-thaw cycles, choosing the right material upfront can save you thousands in repairs down the road.
Here's what to look for:
✔️ Absorption rate - lower is better for cold climates. High-absorption brick holds more water, which expands when it freezes and causes cracking.
✔️ Grade SW (Severe Weathering) - always specify SW-grade brick for Alberta exteriors. It's built for exactly this climate.
✔️ Compressive strength - the higher the number, the more durable the brick under pressure and temperature swings.
✔️ Mortar compatibility - even the best brick fails if the mortar isn't rated for cold weather applications.
Not sure where to start? That's what we're here for. We help homeowners and contractors choose materials that are beautiful AND built to last in Southern Alberta.
