Root With Roam: The Great Pumpkin Disappointment! ππΎ
Well, it was finally time to harvest the pumpkins! This pathetic excuse for a pumpkin plant spent the entire summer taking up valuable garden space and rewarded us with a whopping TWO pumpkins. How generous. π Last year's variety was much more productive, so we'll probably go back to that one next year. Roam managed to locate our underwhelming harvest before running around the backyard like a wild woman while we did the actual work. Excellent supervision, as always.
Pumpkins are best harvested when their skin has hardened, their colour has developed, and their stems are starting to dry out. With Ontario's colder weather moving in, it's better to harvest before a hard frost. Once picked, pumpkins with intact skins and stems can be cured in a warm, dry, well-ventilated spot for about 10β14 days to help toughen their skins for storage. Any pumpkins that are soft, damaged, or not fully mature should be used sooner rather than stored long-term. Hopefully, next year's pumpkin patch will be a little less embarrassing! π
