There are 4 parameters to consider when evaluating sewer system flows: precipitation, rainfall derived infiltration and inflow (RDII), base wastewater flow (BWF), and groundwater infiltration (GWI).

Understanding the relationship between these wet-weather and dry-weather flow elements can help identify sources of inflow and infiltration such as groundwater entering the collection system through leaks in the infrastructure.

Hydrographs, such as the one shown below are fundamental when we perform flow studies derived from the data collected by our monitors and rain gauges.

Over the past few months, many studies have observed wastewater to monitor the impact of COVID-19 affecting communities across the world. The growing advancement of technology in sewage can aid in understanding future outbreaks of COVID-19 and other pandemics.

Recently, the UN Environment Programme released a COVID-19 Waste Management Factsheet highlighting the significance of sustainable wastewater management and research to raise awareness for safe sanitation practices and sewage monitoring in treatment facilities.

Check out the factsheet to learn more about the future of wastewater management and sanitation initiatives to protect the environment and our health: https://wedocs.unep.org/bitstream/handle/20.500.11822/32802/FS9.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y

With the introduction of public facilities opening up again, there is an increased discussion about a second wave of COVID-19. Researchers from Ryerson University are teaming up with Toronto Public Health, Toronto Water and Public Health Ontario - Santé publique Ontario to focus on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 through public health surveillance and actions by studying wastewater.

Kim Gilbride, a chemistry and biology professor at RU is hopeful this research could be fundamental in delivering rapid response measures when the novel coronavirus is detected in test areas.

Sewage surveillance has been successful in the past to detect early signs of polio outbreaks and this measure can be applied in present day to study the ongoing pandemic.

Toronto researchers look to sewage to track remnants of the virus that causes COVID-19, hoping for an early alert to a dreaded second wave and to iden...
