A challenging site should not automatically be treated as a problem to eliminate.
Too often, the first instinct is to flatten, blast or heavily rework the land so the building can sit on it more easily. Sometimes that is necessary. Other times, the better response is to let the site influence the design.
On steep or rocky properties, the foundation strategy, building massing and access need to be considered from the beginning. These are not decisions that should be left until the construction drawings are underway.
The structure, architecture and landscape all need to work together.
Done properly, the home can feel connected to the land rather than imposed on it. It can preserve more of the natural character of the property, reduce unnecessary disturbance and create views and spaces that would not exist on a flat site.
The difficult sites often demand the most coordination, but they can also lead to the most interesting solutions.
