A Patio Door Should Open Your Home—not Trap You Inside It.

For this family, using the backyard had become a struggle.

The rollers underneath the old patio door were completely worn out, making the heavy panel extremely difficult to slide. Repair was no longer practical, and the locking mechanism had become badly rusted and unreliable.

The homeowners often avoided opening the door because they were never sure they would be able to close and lock it again. On several occasions, the lock would not engage at all—leaving the family with an unsecured entrance overnight.

A door that technically exists but cannot be used safely is no longer doing its job.

We replaced the old unit with a new, properly fitted patio door that slides smoothly, closes easily and locks reliably. The family can now move freely between the kitchen and backyard without wrestling with a heavy panel every time.

The new door also includes a safety-focused glass configuration: tempered glass on the exterior and laminated glass on the interior. If laminated glass is struck, its internal layer helps hold the broken glass together rather than allowing the opening to clear immediately. It is not “burglar-proof,” but it can make forced entry more difficult and time-consuming.

This replacement improved more than the appearance of the home:

When Is Retrofit Window Installation the Right Choice?

At Panorama Windows and Doors, we generally recommend full-frame window replacement—and there is an important reason for that.

With a full-frame replacement, the entire old window and frame are removed. This gives our installers access to the complete opening, allowing us to inspect it, correct the insulation, address possible water-entry points and properly seal the new window to the structure of the house.

If an old window leaks, a retrofit replacement may not solve the problem because the original frame remains in place. If drafts are caused by missing or deteriorated insulation around that frame, installing a new window inside it will not correct the insulation problem either.

You may end up replacing the window while keeping the old problems.

A full-frame replacement allows us to take responsibility for the complete installation—not just the new window installed inside an existing frame.

However, there are situations where retrofit installation is the smarter and safer choice.

In this kitchen, the existing window frame was tightly integrated with the cabinets, interior trim and tile backsplash. The matching backsplash tile was no longer available, and damaging the cabinets or tile could have turned one window replacement into a much larger and extremely expensive kitchen renovation.

The homeowner had no history of drafts or water leakage around this opening, and our inspection confirmed that the existing frame was suitable to remain. We therefore recommended a custom retrofit window installation.

The old window components were carefully removed while the existing frame, trim, cabinets and backsplash remained untouched. The new energy-efficient window was manufactured to fit inside the preserved opening and installed without damaging a single tile.

The result:

✓ A new, properly fitted replacement window
✓ No damage to the backsplash
✓ No damage to the kitchen cabinets
✓ No unnecessary reconstruction
✓ A satisfied homeowner

Retrofit installation can also make sense when removing a frame could damage custom millwork, unique trim used throughout the house or irreplaceable architectural details in a historic home.

But retrofit should not be selected simply because it is faster, easier or cheaper. It is appropriate only when the existing frame is solid, dry, properly insulated and free from known leakage—and when preserving it protects valuable finishes around the opening.

The installation method should be chosen for the individual home, not for the installer’s convenience.
