The Benefits of Hard Pruning Your Shrubs This Spring

Early spring is the perfect time to give your shrubs a fresh start with a hard pruning—a technique where shrubs are cut back significantly to encourage healthy, vigorous new growth. Hard pruning is typically best done in the early spring, before the plant has started to grow.
Why consider hard pruning?

-Stimulates Back Budding – Many shrubs have dormant buds hidden along older wood. When pruned hard, these buds “wake up” and push out new shoots, giving your plant a fuller shape, with lots of new growth.

-Controls Size – Keeps overgrown plants in check without sacrificing long-term health.

-Rejuvenates plants – Removing older growth encourages newer growth, resulting in a “younger” plant.

-Improves Shape and Structure – Removes leggy or woody growth that can make shrubs look tired or sparse.

Some plants that respond well to hard pruning:
-Spirea
-Burning bush
-Yew
-Rugosa rose

Caution must be made with some plants, as they will not back bud well or at all. Globe cedars are an example of a plant that will not back bud reliably. Also use caution with shrubs that flower in the spring, such as lilacs, as you will be cutting off flower buds that are already set!
