When your basement floods, your first instinct might be to start cleaning up immediately but some actions can actually make the situation worse.

❌ Don’t Enter Standing Water With Power On
Water and electricity are extremely dangerous together. If the water level is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, stay out until power is shut off.

❌ Don’t Wait to Deal With It
Water damage spreads quickly. Within 24–48 hours, moisture can lead to mold growth and further structural damage.

❌ Don’t Try to Dry Everything Yourself
Household fans and towels often aren’t enough. Proper drying requires professional equipment to remove hidden moisture from floors, walls, and insulation.

If your home experiences water damage, quick action matters.

ServiceMaster Restore Belleville is available 24/7/365 to help restore your property.

❄️Keep heat consistent
Set thermostats no lower than 15°C / 60°F, even when away.
Sudden drops in temperature increase the risk of frozen pipes.

❄️Protect exposed pipes
Insulate pipes in basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and exterior walls.

❄️Let warm air circulate
Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow heat to reach plumbing during extreme cold.

❄️Seal drafts and openings
Check doors, windows, vents, and foundation cracks. Cold air infiltration can freeze pipes inside walls.

❄️Keep garage doors closed
Especially if water lines run through the garage. Even brief exposure can freeze pipes.

❄️Know your water shut-off
Locate your main water shut-off valve and make sure it’s accessible. This can prevent major damage if a pipe bursts.

❄️Clear snow and ice buildup
Remove heavy snow from roofs, vents, and around foundations to prevent ice dams and structural stress. The probability of damage increases during the thaw.

Your beloved Christmas tree may be extremely dangerous.

Here are tips to stay safe this holiday season:

Choosing the Tree
🎄Buy a fresh tree: Needles should be green, flexible, and hard to pull off. If they fall easily or feel brittle, the tree is too dry.
🎄Fresh-cut is best: Ask for a tree that was cut recently, or cut about ½ inch off the trunk before placing it in water at home.

Watering & Placement
🎄Water daily: A real tree can drink a lot of water, especially in the first week. Never let the water level drop below the base.
🎄Keep away from heat sources: Place the tree at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, heaters, radiators, candles, or heat vents.
🎄Avoid blocking exits: Make sure the tree doesn’t block doors or hallways.

Lights & Decorations
🎄Use LED lights: They produce less heat and are more energy-efficient.
🎄Check cords and bulbs: Discard any lights with frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections.
🎄Turn lights off when asleep or away: Never leave tree lights on overnight or when leaving the house.
🎄Avoid overloading outlets: Use surge protectors and avoid daisy-chaining extension cords.

If you don't clear your gutters before winter, you can cause serious and expensive damage, including the formation of ice dams, which can lead to roof leaks and structural strain.

Water will overflow and pool around your foundation, causing damage to the foundation itself and potentially leading to basement flooding.

You also risk water seeping into your roof and siding, leading to rot, mold, and further structural problems.
