5 years ago today, Northland Electrical officially became a real thing… which is wild, because I still remember packing up my tools thinking, “WTF am I even doing?”
I knew I needed more Nova and Kelly time. Nova was already fiercely independent and growing fast. Kelly was supporting me like she always does, never blinking when I was working nights, weekends, holidays, and probably in my sleep too. But we needed more time together, not just passing each other like exhausted roommates.
So I built an exit strategy:
Step 1: Stop working for someone else.
Step 2: Just take the damn leap already.
That night I picked the name, created the logo, and immediately became too excited/terrified to sleep. Instead I stayed up talking to Brandon about future projections and dreams — you know, all the fun stuff before reality shows up with invoices, permits, and service calls.
We were determined, skilled, and absolutely convinced we’d figure out this magical thing called “work-life balance.”
Spoiler: the balance… does not come pre-wired.
You don’t find it. You build it.
And apparently you rebuild it. Frequently.
Some days I remind myself to take the early quits or sneak in a long weekend. Other days I’m answering emergency calls and invoicing until late thinking, “Yup… totally balanced. Nailed it.”
But through all of it, my goal stayed the same:
Stay honest.
Do good work.
Take care of people.
And never forget the ones who got me here.
Huge thanks to my family, my business partner, the unbelievable employees who have become family, the contractors who keep us running, and the customers who put their trust in us.
Here’s to the next 5 years — keep going, keep growing!
