Happy Friday everyone,

As we're all getting into the swing of spring cleaning and outdoor projects, I wanted to share a few quick reminders about electrical safety. It's easy to forget these things, and a little caution goes a long way!

- Outdoor Outlets: Check your outdoor outlets before plugging in any tools or decorations. Make sure the covers are intact and they're not cracked or damaged. If you see any issues, it's best to get them checked by a qualified electrician.
- Extension Cords: With gardening and yard work, we often use extension cords. Remember to use outdoor-rated cords and avoid overloading them. Don't use indoor extension cords outside! And never nail or staple extension cords - this can damage the insulation.
- Water and Electricity Don't Mix: This is a big one! Keep electrical tools and appliances away from wet areas. If you're using a power washer, be extra careful around outlets and cords.
- Overhead Power Lines: If you're doing any tree trimming or working on a ladder, be mindful of overhead power lines. Keep yourself and any equipment at least 3 meters/10 feet away.
- Spring Storms: Spring can bring some unpredictable weather. If we have any storms with lightning, it's a good idea to unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges.

Just a few things to keep in mind as we enjoy the warmer weather. Let's all look out for each other and stay safe.

As the week draws to a close, it's important to remember that while homeowners are permitted to perform electrical work, a permit or notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is mandatory. This ensures adherence to electrical code requirements.

For tasks where you lack confidence or expertise, engaging a licensed electrical contractor (LEC) is recommended. To verify their credentials, request their ESA/ECRA license number and confirm their registration on the ESA registry.
