Toolbox Talk | Protect First. Paint Second. 🧰
A professional paint job isn't only about what gets painted. It's also about what you don't.
Before the coating goes on, you need to properly mask and protect surrounding surfaces. On this job, that means carefully covering the garage doors and adjacent areas before work begins.
It's one of those steps you may never notice in the finished project, and that's exactly the point.
Good preparation keeps the coating where it belongs and helps deliver a clean, professional result.

Protect first. Paint second.

Tip Tuesday | Exterior Tip 🏠
Exterior paint doesn't usually fail overnight.
Fading, small cracks and areas where the coating is beginning to lift can be early signs that an exterior finish is wearing down. Catching those changes before widespread peeling develops makes it easier to address the surface and protect what's underneath.
As summer winds down, it's a good time to take a closer look at exterior painted surfaces and note any areas that may need attention.
The earlier you spot the wear, the better you can plan the maintenance.

Tip Tuesday | Colour Tip
When you're planning to repaint a room, it's easy to focus on the walls and forget to look up.
Over time, ceilings can become dull or discoloured, and you may not notice until you paint the walls.
Refreshing the ceiling at the same time can help brighten the space and give the entire room a cleaner, more cohesive finish.
Sometimes the finishing touch is right above you.

Maintenance Minute | Look Up Before You Repaint 🏢
Sometimes what looks like a paint problem is actually telling you something else.
Ceiling staining, discolouration, bubbling, or peeling can signal moisture getting where it shouldn't. Painting over the damage may make it disappear temporarily, but it won't solve what's causing it.
Before refinishing the area:
✔ Identify the source of the problem
✔ Complete any necessary repairs
✔ Allow the surface to dry properly
✔ Repair and prepare the damaged area
✔ Then repaint
For property and facility managers, catching these signs early can help prevent a cosmetic issue from becoming a much larger maintenance problem.
Fix the cause. Then fix the finish.

Tip Tuesday | Exterior Tip ☀️
When it comes to exterior painting, the air temperature is only part of the story.
A surface sitting in direct sun can be much hotter than the surrounding air, while a shaded area on the same building may be considerably cooler.
That difference can affect how exterior coatings apply, dry and perform.
As professional painters, we consider the full picture: air temperature, surface temperature, sun exposure, and the available drying window before deciding where and when to paint.
Sometimes, the best approach is to work around the sun.
Same day. Different surface conditions.

💡 Tip Tuesday | Colour Tip
Ever chosen the perfect paint colour in the store, only to have it look completely different once it was on the wall?
You're not imagining it.
Paint colours are influenced by more than the paint chip. Natural light, artificial lighting, undertones, room orientation and surrounding finishes can all change how a colour appears in your space.
That's why we always recommend testing a sample in the room before making your final decision.
Taking the time to see the colour in your own space can help you choose a finish you'll enjoy for years to come.

💡 Tip Tuesday | Prep Tip
A long-lasting paint job starts before the first coat of paint is ever applied.
Before we paint, we make sure the surface is properly cleaned. Pressure washing removes dirt, chalking, mildew and other contaminants that can prevent paint from bonding properly.
Taking the time to prepare the surface helps create:
✔ Better paint adhesion
✔ A smoother, more consistent finish
✔ Longer-lasting results
This project, overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River in Brockville, is a great reminder that even with an incredible view, preparation always comes first.
Professional results begin with professional preparation.

🎨 Behind the Brush

Most people will never notice a perfectly cut line...

Until they see one that isn't.

Creating crisp, clean transitions where walls meet ceilings takes patience, precision, and years of experience. It's one of those small details that quietly transforms a good paint job into a professional finish.

At McLaughlin Painting, we believe the best craftsmanship is often found in the details people don't even realize they're appreciating.

The difference is in the details.

💡 Tip Tuesday
A professional paint job starts long before the first coat is applied.
Preparation is one of the biggest factors in achieving a smooth, durable finish that stands the test of time.
Before the paint comes:
✔ Cleaning
✔ Repairs
✔ Sanding
✔ Priming
Each step helps create better adhesion, a more even finish, and longer-lasting results.
When preparation is done properly, the final coat doesn't just look better—it performs better too.
