Ordering Concrete Isn’t Complicated. You Just Need to Walk in With 4 Details.

Before you call your supplier, have these ready:

1. Quantity. How many yards. Measure your forms, calculate volume, add a small buffer.

2. Strength. The MPa your project calls for. 25 MPa for non-structural, 32 MPa standard for driveways and garage slabs in Alberta, higher for structural work.

3. Slump. How fluid the mix should be. Low slump for stairs and steep surfaces, higher slump for slabs that need to flow into forms.

4. Delivery date and time. When the truck arrives — and how that lines up with your crew, your forms, and the weather.

Bring those four numbers to the conversation and the rest is easy.

Acreage Concrete and City Concrete Aren’t the Same Job. The Distance Changes Everything.

In the city, the batch plant is close. A drum mixer loads up, drives a few minutes, and the concrete is still well inside its working window when it arrives.

Out on an acreage, that math falls apart.

A drum mixer batches at the plant and starts the clock immediately. Concrete has roughly 90 minutes from batch to placement before slump tightens and workability drops. Add 45 minutes of gravel road, a wrong turn, or a site that isn’t quite ready — and your load is already dying before the first yard comes out. Sometimes it gets rejected on arrival. Your whole day, gone.

A volumetric mixer solves the distance problem completely.

Nothing mixes until the truck is on site. Cement, sand, gravel, water — all stored separately, all stable, no clock running on the drive. Whether your acreage is 20 minutes or 2 hours out, the concrete is mixed fresh, on your land, the moment you call for the pour.

City pour? Both trucks can work.

Acreage pour? The volumetric mixer is the only one that arrives with the clock still at zero.

When the temperature drops below 5°C, concrete chemistry slows down. Cold concrete doesn’t just take longer to set — it can stop curing entirely.

So we engineer heat into the mix. That’s hot mix concrete. And it’s where a volumetric mixer changes the game.

A drum truck batches at the plant. By the time it crosses Calgary in –20°C, the mix has already lost critical temperature — and you can’t put heat back in.

A volumetric mixer doesn’t have that problem.

Materials stay separate in transit. Water arrives hot — up to 140°F. Aggregate stays insulated. Admixtures dose on demand, calibrated to the day’s conditions.

The hot mix is built at the truck, on your site, at the temperature it needs to be — usually 15–20°C above ambient.

A drum truck can attempt a winter pour. A volumetric mixer is built to deliver hot mix concrete properly.

Combine that with thermal blankets, hoarding, and ground heaters — and a slab that should’ve failed in January cures the way it would in July.

Hot mix concrete and the volumetric mixer are the same answer to the same problem.
