Here are some great tips to help your yard get through this crazy heat wave we have going on:

-Water your flowers, gardens, and trees twice a day. Once early in the morning before work and once late in the evening.

-If possible, move your flowers and plants to a shady area of the yard where they will not be in direct sunlight during these extreme (high 20’s and 30’s) heat conditions we are going to experience.

-If it is not possible to move them, make sure to keep them adequately watered as mentioned above or even better, build them sun blocks to keep the majority of the heat and sun off of them.

-Water your lawn either early morning before work or late evening.

-Mow your lawn higher than you normally would. This will help reduce the stress on the lawn and help reduce the chances of your lawn getting burnt by the sun/heat.

-Avoid watering in the middle of the day in full sunlight and heat. Water will evaporate quickly, but even more importantly, the water droplets act as a small magnifying lens and can actually burn your lawn or plants instead of helping them.

-It is human nature to want to water your plants and lawn in the heat of the day when the sun is beating down but avoid that urge as much as you can and do your watering in the cooler periods of the day.

-No one wants to be out doing yard work, so let us do it for you! Shoot us a message or email ([email protected]) today and let us help you avoid the heat.

Lets talk about lawn fertilizer. Fertilizing is an essential part of any comprehensive lawn care plan and provide your lawn with the nutrients needed to produce strong roots and grasses. Fertilizer is an important part of having a healthy lawn, which in turn makes your lawn better at preventing w**ds, disease and drought.

We use a high quality, slow release granular fertilizer that is specific for the nutrients required during specific times of the year. That means we will not apply a fall fertilizer blend in the spring time as the plants require different nutrients at these different times of the year. Our fertilizer is formulated for the Calgary area and the general soil nutrient needs for this area. We can also do soil samples and submit for nutrient analysis, which will then allow a special blend, specific for your lawn.

Get a hold of us now for all of your spring lawn maintenance needs to get your yard and lawn looking tiptop for summer.

Power Raking
Power raking is a great way to remove the dead debris and thatch that builds up on your lawn throughout the growing season and over winter. Power raking does not cause extensive damage to your lawn, so it rapidly recovers and maintains its density and thickness. Power raking removes the debris/thatch which is then collected and disposed of. Once the power raking is completed, we will give your lawn its first mow and trim of the season.
We will assess your lawn condition and then set the height of the power rake to ensure the optimal settings for your lawn are achieved. Power raking will give your lawn a smoother, healthier surface when it is complete. Combine it with an aerate and/or a spring fertilizer application to get the best possible outcome for your lawn and give it the jump start it needs to outcompete those pesky w**ds.

When should I power rake?
Power raking is best in early to mid spring (April-May) to give it the best jump on the growing season. If you are seeing a lot of w**ds on your lawn, then power raking can help with that by promoting the healthy growth of your grass, which in turn out-competes w**ds. If you water your lawn, but the water pools or runs off, then a power rake (along with aerate) can greatly help with that. Grass will naturally shed vegetation as it grows, which is called thatch, while a small amount is healthy for your lawn, in places such as Alberta, it is extremely easy to have too much thatch. If your lawn crinkles under your feet or feels prickly, you likely have too much thatch (a lot of people think its too dry, but most times it is a thatch build up). If you have a young lawn (

Core Aeration
Core aeration is the process of removing small soil plugs from the topsoil of your lawn. These plugs are not removed from your lawn and are either left intact to naturally breakdown or are broke down during power raking to allow the loose soil to get back into the topsoil of your lawn quickly. Core aerating is often described as the single best thing you can do to create a thick, healthy, and robust lawn.

When is aeration needed?
It may not seem like your lawn is (or could get) compacted, however it does happen easier than you think. Every day use by your children, dogs, and even mowing can create compaction in your lawn. If you also live where the soil is clay based (such as Calgary), your lawn will be more prone to compaction. If you are noticing that your lawn often looks stressed (even in a good growing year) and your soil is hard to the touch, or water either pools heavily or runs off quickly without filtering into your soil, you likely have compaction issues. If you have these inclinations, take a screwdriver and try to stick it into your lawn. If you meet any resistance, you likely have some soil compaction and aeration will help with that.

Aeration Benefits:
-helps reduce soil compaction (which aids in water infiltration and absorption)
-encourages deep, healthy roots
-helps eliminate drought stress
-increases the uptake of fertilizer
-stimulates new turf growth
-reduced water runoff
-increased protection against drought, insects, disease, and w**ds
