Core Aeration
Core aeration is the process of removing small soil plugs from the topsoil of your lawn. These plugs are not removed from your lawn and are either left intact to naturally breakdown or are broke down during power raking to allow the loose soil to get back into the topsoil of your lawn quickly. Core aerating is often described as the single best thing you can do to create a thick, healthy, and robust lawn.
When is aeration needed?
It may not seem like your lawn is (or could get) compacted, however it does happen easier than you think. Every day use by your children, dogs, and even mowing can create compaction in your lawn. If you also live where the soil is clay based (such as Calgary), your lawn will be more prone to compaction. If you are noticing that your lawn often looks stressed (even in a good growing year) and your soil is hard to the touch, or water either pools heavily or runs off quickly without filtering into your soil, you likely have compaction issues. If you have these inclinations, take a screwdriver and try to stick it into your lawn. If you meet any resistance, you likely have some soil compaction and aeration will help with that.
Aeration Benefits:
-helps reduce soil compaction (which aids in water infiltration and absorption)
-encourages deep, healthy roots
-helps eliminate drought stress
-increases the uptake of fertilizer
-stimulates new turf growth
-reduced water runoff
-increased protection against drought, insects, disease, and w**ds
