Before any coating goes down, the concrete underneath has to be clean and properly profiled. That's where shot blasting comes in — and it's one of the most misunderstood steps in industrial flooring.
Here's how it works: the machine propels tiny steel shot at high velocity onto the concrete surface, then recovers and recycles it. The result is a textured, contaminant-free profile that coatings can actually grip.
A few things worth knowing:
• It removes more than dust. Shot blasting strips existing floor coatings, paint, line markings, and adhesives in a single pass.
• It's fast at scale. In large open areas, we can prepare up to 10,000 square feet per day.
• It doesn't have to be messy. Our Blastrac machines run with HEPA-filtered industrial vacuums, keeping the process virtually dust-free — a big deal in occupied facilities.
• It sets up the system that follows. Epoxy, cementitious urethane, MMA, and self-levelling systems all depend on correct surface prep to bond and perform.
The takeaway: a coating is only as good as the surface beneath it. Skip the prep, and you'll be redoing the floor sooner than you planned.
