Thunderstorms hit Calgary a couple of times in the last week. If you looked out at your lawn either morning after, it probably looked well-watered. Here's what our crews are actually finding when we check underneath.

Calgary's clay-heavy soil holds water at the surface far better than it lets water through it. A hard, fast summer thunderstorm can soak the top inch of your lawn while the root zone two to three inches down stays dry - because compacted clay sheds water sideways and down the surface almost as fast as it falls, instead of absorbing it. The lawn looks fine from the porch. It isn't always fine at the roots.

The fix isn't more water - it's giving the water somewhere to go. Core aeration opens channels through that compacted clay so rain and irrigation can actually reach the root zone instead of running off it. It's one of the most common things our crews find when we're out on routes across Tuscany, Evergreen, Auburn Bay, and McKenzie Towne after a storm week like this one.

If your lawn's had two "good soakings" this month and still looks stressed, that's worth a look - not more watering.

Here's the funny thing about neighbourhood lawn standings: they matter more than most people admit. Nobody says it out loud, but everyone notices whose grass came in first in May, who mowed cleanest through July, whose lawn's still green in August when everyone else's has browned out. It's an unspoken scoreboard, and the people at the top are usually the ones who quietly got a jump on it earlier in the season.

We're at the halfway mark of Calgary's lawn care calendar. Here's what a healthy Calgary lawn needs from now through October 🍀

📅 Mid-summer feeding (July). Slow-release nitrogen application, timed carefully around heat spikes to avoid burn. Feeds the lawn through the peak stress period without pushing tender growth that can't handle the temperatures.

📅 W**d control application (July / August). Summer broadleaf w**ds (thistle, plantain, oxalis, established clover and dandelion) are actively growing right now. Treatment timing here matters because w**ds are actively taking up product.

📅 Chinch bug watch (July / August). Peak activity window in Calgary. Coffee can test any spreading brown patches. Early diagnosis = smaller repair area.

📅 Late-summer overseed prep (August). Identify areas that need repair before September's overseed window opens. Compaction from Stampede foot traffic often shows up in this planning phase.

📅 Overseeding window (September). Cooler soil temperatures, better moisture, and less competition make September the strongest establishment window for new seed. This is when to fix what mid-summer damaged.

📅 Fall winterizer (late September / October). High-potassium application that builds winter hardiness and stores carbs in the roots for spring green-up. The single most valuable application of the whole year for what it does the following May.

📅 Final mow (October). Height matters. Too short = winter kill exposure. Too long = matting under snow. Cut to about 2.5 inches before the last mow of the season.
