It’s the days following Christmas when vegetables look like foreign objects, you’re not sure if you’re supposed to be at work or in front of the fireplace and you’ve consumed your weight in Christmas cookies.

Power your tree safely and avoid hidden hazards!

🌲 plug lights into a surge protected, power, strip or extension cord rated for indoor holiday lighting

🌲 refrain from running cords under rugs, behind tightly, pressured furniture, or pinched under the tree stand. All of these can cause insulation wear or overheating.

🌲 always turn your lights off when you leave the house or sleep. Using a smart timer is a great idea also!

Bedroom lighting isn’t just about making a room look nice, it has a real impact on comfort, mood, and even your health!

Bedrooms should have four types of lighting. Ambient, task lighting, accent lighting and dimmers that let you adjust the lighting based on the mood.

Choose the right cord for your outdoor holiday setup!

⚡️ CSA- or cUL-certified only — look for a certification mark from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (cUL) to ensure it meets national electrical standards.

⚡️ Rated for outdoor use — the cord must be marked “W” or “W-A”, which means it’s weather-resistant and safe in moisture, sunlight, and temperature swings.

⚡️ Gauge matters — use a thicker wire (lower AWG number) for high-power tools:
16 AWG – light use (holiday lights)
14 AWG – medium (lawn tools, leaf blower)
12 AWG – heavy (snow blower, space heater)
Length — only as long as needed. Long cords cause voltage drop and overheating.
