I’m not embarrassed to admit that I’m a bit of a rockstar 🤘🍅 when it comes to growing tomatoes from seed. In fact, it’s the number one veggie plant that I grow successfully and in abundance every season.

After nearly 10 years, I’ve honed a system that yields healthy, juicy, high-producing tomato plants every season.

Quick methods I swear by:

1. Start early

I start my tomato seeds indoors about 13-14 weeks before planting out to get a head start. By the time I’m planting them outdoors, they’re already 4-6 feet tall and producing fruit. That means that I’m harvesting bowlfuls of tomatoes by the end of June!

2. Stage my setup

I stagger the growing into stages, starting with a Nanodome mini greenhouse, then adjustable LED shelf, followed by a move into my greenhouse. I wait for frost-free days and nightly temps above 9°C before permanently planting outdoors. Even without a greenhouse, I continue to grow in a sunny window indoors.

3. Plant in deep-rooted containers for easy upgrades.

I start my seeds in deep rooted large seeding containers and plant only one seed per cell. I absolutely love the 6 cell containers for seeding deep-rooted plants like tomatoes - they’re reusable, extra deep and larger than the average disposable ones. Tomato plants run out of room fast, so planting in these containers means I don’t have to transplant my seedlings immediately after they have germinated.

4. Transplant once roots fill the pot

I only upgrade to a larger pot once I noticed the stem getting too long, and the leaves starting to yellow - a sign that the plant roots are running out of space. This means only a couple of container size upgrades before planting permanently in the ground.

5. No repeat fertilization

I also don’t bother with repeat fertilization. Instead, I use a liquid organic fertilizer only at the time of each transplant.

THE RESULT = Healthy, delicious, highly-productive plants every season!

Tell me your best tomato tips in the comments, or try one of these tricks this season and share your results! 🌿🍅

As Canadian Thanksgiving nears, I’m pausing to acknowledge how much I’ve gained from this garden season—and it’s had less to do with growing food and more with growing me. 🌱

The garden’s been a patient, graceful teacher. Particularly on tough days—stress, doubt, overwhelm—I really chose to listen, and the lessons landed.

So, here is what the garden taught me that I’m so grateful for 👇👇👇

1️⃣ Living in joy and gratitude is the key to a good life.

When I felt misaligned, stepping outside to reconnect with my garden almost immediately jolted me into a higher vibration—and joy followed, potent joy. It transformed my day, poured over into everything else, and gave me a little superpower I can call on anytime. ✨

It didn’t come from buying something new or sipping wine to take the edge off my day; it was a simple, constant magic accessible all around me at all times, and I almost overlooked it.

2️⃣ Resilience is in my human blueprint.

I watched nature’s rhythms mirror my own: as fall quieted the garden, I craved rest and coziness. That alignment—seasonal pacing and self-care—felt like a signal from within: thrive by listening to what nature is telling you.

And, I watched my garden heal itself miraculously following unfavourable weather and disease. It found a way to repair itself and come back stronger, and more abundant, often without any intervention from me.  This made me realize that I had the same resilience inside of me. That my body knows how to to self-correct and thrive.

3️⃣ Reciprocity with all living beings is my North Star.

As Deepak Chopra says, “In our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives”.

Rather than asking “What’s in it for me?” I started asking, “What can I do to help other living beings thrive?” I realized that when we relate to nature and one another as co-creators, we invite flow, harmony, abundance and well-being into our lives. This is undeniable and it is part of our purpose on this earth.

Gratitude, joy, resilience, and reciprocal love—that’s what this season gave me. Happy Thanksgiving and may your days be bright with small miracles. 🍁

We’re coming up to my absolute favourite time of the year - the fall Harvest Season. 🎃🌻🍂I’m so excited that this year the garden has gifted us some beautiful goodies to harvest this fall, like these 10 foot tall sunflowers!

My favourite varieties to grow 👉 Velvet Queen and Gigantus

I love planting sunflowers in my “outdoor showroom” as they are definitely a show stopper! I feel they bring joy to me and the people that walk by my yard. And, when everything else is turning yellow and drying up, they continue to add beauty to my garden with their impressive shades of yellow and burnt orange.

This is also the time where we prepare to pull out all our delicious root veggies like carrots, beets, onions, and potatoes. And, of course - our beloved mini pumpkins, apples and pears.

Stay tuned for our annual photoshoot with our harvest goodies COMING SOON!

Tomatoes are not frost tolerant and here in YYC we never know when frost and snow are going to come. It could happen as early as the first week of September. That’s why it’s important to start harvesting all those tomatoes now to increase your total tomato harvest for the season.

When we start to dip down to the mid to low teens you may notice that your tomato plant is starting to slow down production: less flowering and less fruiting - BUT! The ripening is still happening as long as there is fruit on the vine and the plant is alive!

By picking the semi-ripe fruit starting now, you can encourage your tomato plant to shift its attention to the unripe (green) fruit on the vine. If you do this daily, you will notice more and more tomatoes turning varying shades of yellow and orange immediately. Sometimes within the same day.

The best news is that the unripe, but starting to ripen fruit will continue to ripen indoors. Just place it a bowl or box with other ripe fruit or tomatoes and watch as they change colour right on your kitchen counter. YES - even the pale green ones will likely turn!

General Tomato Picking Colour Guide:

RED = pick yesterday
ORANGY-RED = pick now
ORANGE = start picking when temperates cool down to 15-18 degrees
YELLOW = start picking when temperatures cool down to 5-15 degrees
PALE GREEN = pick all before first frost

May you all be blessed with red tomatoes until October 31st!

It’s potato harvest time! One of my favourite annual events in the garden season.

If you’re a newbie gardener or a wannabe gardener, I’m here to tell you that you need to add potatoes to your list of THINGS TO GROW NEXT SEASON.

They really are one of the easiest veggies to grow in my experience and they don’t require a lot of time commitment.

There’s something really satisfying about digging up potatoes at the end of a garden season. It’s a form of validation that says “hey, you’re a real farmer now”. Ok ok, maybe this one’s just for me.

I prefer to eat and grow the smaller varieties called new potatoes. I find they are sweeter in taste and they work well for smaller gardening areas such as in more urban settings.

The best part about growing potatoes is that the harvest lives on until the potatoes run out! You can store them in a dark, cool space to use well after the garden season has ended.

If you’ve been wondering about growing potatoes but haven’t committed yet, what is the one thing that’s holding you back?

01/09/2025

January is the perfect time to start dreaming and planning out what you will grow in your garden this season. It also offers something joyous to look forward to once the fun of the holidays is over. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons why I garden in a climate where winters are so long.

January is really for planning and preparation. If you’re a true garden keener or you live in a milder climate, you may even be starting some seeds during this month.

In Calgary, I wait until February to start growing indoors. That means I just have January to do a full inventory of what I need - including seeds, soil, and other seed starting materials - and get everything in time for sowing.

But, even before doing that, I love to grab a coffee and sit down with my garden journal to map out my upcoming season. This includes reflecting on what I grew last season, how it was planted, what worked about that, what didn’t, and what I would like to do and grow differently this season.

Gardening invites us to constantly ebb and flow, try new things, be open to learning, exploring, and experimenting. That’s what makes it so fun!

Check out slide #3 for some great garden journal prompts and share your answer to question #3 below!

Happy planning and dreaming!

If there was one reason to start growing something this upcoming year, let it be for your kids, and their kids, and their kids kids. We can see this tiny effort as our collective contribution to raising a new generation of RESILIENT, SOCIALLY + EMOTIONALLY BALANCED and CONNECTED children.

Ever since my own kids, age 5 and 8, received neurodivergent diagnoses about two years ago, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to learning how to support their unique needs for enrichment and stimulation, energy release, nervous-system regulation, and social-emotional wellbeing. I quickly found myself attracting numerous conversations with friends, neighbours and online support groups specifically about ADHD, as it often seems to be present along with other neurodivergent behaviours.

Ironically, I also happened to start my gardening business around the same time, and would often involve my clients’, neighbours’, and school kids in my gardening lessons. I started to witness this incredible effect that gardening had on kids of all ages.

👉They expressed wonder and excitement
👉They appeared engaged and present
👉They felt valued and like they had a sense of purpose.
👉They immersed themselves in the task at hand with focus, attention and detail.
👉They appeared calm, at ease and genuinely happy.
👉They shared their experience with so much enthusiasm with their parents.
👉They asked to come back.

The list of the benefits of involving kids in gardening truly goes on and on. It’s still surprising to me that we haven’t placed as much emphasis on this need in schools and communities as we have on exercise, and yoga and mindfulness.

Have you tried gardening with your kids? Have you noticed anything change in their attitudes, behaviours or eating habits?
