To prepare your walls for paint remove any loose, peeling paint with a paint scraper and/or sandpaper. Sand all edges to smooth the surface. Fill small cracks and nail holes with spackling compound using a putty knife. Let dry and then sand smooth. Remove any dust with a moist cloth. For larger holes and/or cracks use mesh joint tape, covering it with joint compound, Consider lightly sanding the entire surface to ensure good paint adhesion. Scrub all surfaces with a mild detergent and a sponge or cloth to remove dirt, grease, oil, etc. Rinse the surface well and allow it to dry. Apply a primer to the surface. Avoid "spot priming," which can result in a non-uniform appearance between primed and unprimed areas.

Though many fail to realize it, the first step is actually preparation. Interior and exterior painting requires a large amount of surface preparation! Different surfaces (wood, plaster, metal, etc.) require different paint preparation procedures. This groundwork ensures long-lasting results.

Surface preparation involves various methods that treat the surface of walls, doors and trim prior to paint application. It includes chemically and/or mechanically clearing the surface of pre-existing coatings (paint, stain, etc.), residue (ink, grease, lipstick, crayon, etc.), surface imperfections (holes, dings, nicks, cracks), organic matter (mildew, mould, etc.), oxidation and other contaminants. It often involves the application of primer/sealer. These procedures ensure that the surface is ready to receive a coating.

When choosing which residential painting contractor to hire, get estimates. Ask at least 3 painting contractors for a detailed written estimate. The estimates should be a clear indication of what you are paying for and how long the project will take. Make sure they include a summary of labour costs (preparation, painting, clean up), material costs, the number of coats of primer and paint to be applied, the time frame for completion, the brand of materials to be used, travel costs and details of the scope of the job.

Satin paint has a pearl-like finish and soft sheen. It resists mildew and fading and is easy to clean, making it the most versatile paint type. Use it in moderate to high-traffic areas (playroom, home office, children’s bedrooms) and areas with moisture (kitchen, bathroom, laundry). It’s also great for trim, shutters and siding.

Sheen refers to how much shine or lustre a paint has, and how much light is reflected off the paint’s surface. The finish of a paint is independent of its colour, but can affect how you perceive the hue. Sheen changes the depth of a colour, making it appear brighter or richer in certain lights. Different paint finishes do different jobs. The higher the gloss level, the shinier the paint and the more scrubbable the finish, making different sheens good for different areas of your home.

When choosing the level of paint sheen, consider the room you are painting and the use that you make of the space. The higher the gloss, the shinier the paint and the easier it will be to clean. No matter what sheen you decide upon, always choose high-quality paint. Higher pigment levels will result in the need for fewer applications and more resins will make the paint more durable. Consult your local painting contractor for help in choosing the best paint sheen for your project.
