Here's how to get ahead of it:

1. Clear Snow Away From Your Foundation Shovel or pack snow at least 1–2 feet back from your home's perimeter. This prevents meltwater from pooling against your foundation and seeping into your basement.

2. Keep Drains and Downspouts Clear Make sure exterior drains aren't blocked by snow or ice. Downspouts should be directing water at least 4–6 feet away from your home — check that nothing is obstructing the flow.

3. Watch for Ice Dams Ice buildup along your roofline can trap meltwater and force it under your shingles. If you're noticing heavy icicles or uneven melting patterns, it's time to take action.

4. Test Your Sump Pump Now Don't wait until water is already rising. Test your sump pump today, confirm it's working properly, and make sure the discharge line is clear and directed away from the house.
