Our ability to take on projects regardless of their complexity, size, unique features, or specific obstacles has given our team incredible experience in all things elevating.This project is a perfect example of that determination, knowledge, engineering, and craftsmanship.We recently completed the modernization of a 16,000 lb capacity freight elevator. The original unit was equipped with manual doors and a half-mesh interior gate. We transformed the unit by installing new automatic freight doors and a full-height automatic car gate, dramatically improving the operation, safety, and efficiency of the elevator.But getting there was anything but straightforward.The project required extensive engineering and a highly customized cab reconfiguration. We also removed the existing large inground hydraulic cylinder and replaced it with a new cylinder. The original cylinder presented a major challenge, as it had been installed without PVC protection, leaving it vulnerable to underground contamination. To make matters even more challenging, the cylinder was essentially the same size as the existing culvert. With the cylinder fitting so tightly inside the culvert, using a vacuum truck was not an option. So, our crews got creative.Four 50-ton jacks, working together in unison, were used to extract the cylinder and finally clear the hole.The challenges didn't stop there. The machine room was remotely located in relation to the hoistway, making the replacement of the hydraulic line and fittings an extensive process in itself.Then came the dual-pump tank.The new tank was so large that it barely fit through the existing machine room doors with only millimeters to spare.These are the types of projects that truly test a crew's endurance, knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and craftsmanship.And that's exactly what we love about them.There is a feeling like no other when you finally see a project of this complexity completed.
