Friday is commissioning day! Our customer brought us in to handle all the control work for the boiler system. Normally, for this type of system, you’d use a third-party controller to provide redundancy for the hot water. We took a different approach by installing two relays and staggering the domestic hot water setpoint. This setup gives the slave boiler a domestic backup if the master boiler locks out.

We just commissioned both boilers and wired in the Autoflame DTI controller.
This job was an absolute blast.

We were called to the site for heating issues, and you never know what you're going to walk into—turns out it was a complete wiring nightmare.
We managed to get one boiler running to keep the heat on, but had no choice except to rewire the boiler plant.

We discovered these boilers were causing our customer constant lockout issues. It turned out the programming was incorrect, with too many modulation points and the light-off not set at the proper points, leading to repeated lockouts.
We tore down the boilers to make sure they were clean, then gave them a proper commissioning.

This boiler had several broken refractory tiles, allowing flames to escape from the burner chamber.
Rob and Sean acted quickly and replaced all the tiles to get the boiler up and running before winter set in.

It’s been a while since our last post, which is a great sign that we’ve been keeping busy in the Hydronics & Controls world.
A customer contacted us urgently, needing their boiler project completed as soon as possible.
This burner is truly unique, running on used motor oil and gear oil, with the boiler designed for a mechanic shop.
We tied in all the controls, fired up the oil burner, and added a mixing valve to protect the in-floor heat.
What a cool project this was!

We've been having a lot of fun on this build—hands down, it's one of the most interesting projects we've tackled to date. The system was originally an old steam setup, later converted to hydronic, which brought its own set of challenges. Some of the pipe sizes were unconventional, making tie-ins nearly impossible at times. Despite that, installing the controls has been a great experience. Just a few more hurdles to clear, and we'll be ready to turn this one over.

Working with our son is always a joy.
It's wonderful to witness his excitement as they learn new skills and to have the opportunity to share years of experience with him.
We are now approaching the final stages of this build.

The Riello Power Burners and the Vitocrossal 300 Boiler certainly put us to the test. They were extremely dirty due to poor combustion setup, and the number two boiler wouldn't fire at all. After extensive troubleshooting, we identified that the negative side of the air switch was not engaging. To fix this, we added an airline to balance it out. Now, both power burners are operating smoothly.

Busy Day for us, taking care of our client’s ABSA inspection on this Hurst Steam Boiler.
We were able to have the Brewery shut down for minimal time because they brew beer nonstop, especially with Stampede right around the corner.
