No backyard? No problem.
Here’s how we grow more food in less space—by going vertical. 🧱🌱

We used to think we needed a huge yard to grow our own food...
But the truth? You don’t need more land—just better angles.

Vertical gardening has changed everything for our family:
✅ It saves us space
✅ It keeps the garden accessible
✅ It even uses less water (hello, budget win)

You can start small:
– Grow lettuce in a stacked planter
– Hang herbs by the kitchen window
– Or go big with a Tower Garden like we did

No matter your space, you can grow something.
Start where you are, grow what you love, and let the rest climb with you.

Got a small space you’re working with?

Seed starting in tight spaces?👇🏼

Try the snail roll method.
This simple setup uses a strip of biodegradable material (like garden fabric or news paper), a thin layer of seed-starting soil, and your seeds of choice.

You roll it up gently—just like a cinnamon bun—and stand it upright in a container. Keep it warm and moist, and wait for those sprouts to pop.

Once sprouted and strong, unroll, separate all the seedlings and up-pot!
It’s compact, easy to move, and makes transplanting a breeze.

So what exactly should you prune?🤔

It depends on the plant, but here are a few easy rules of thumb to follow:

1. Remove the bottom leaves or branches that touch the soil or crowd the base—this helps prevent disease from splashing up onto the plant.

2. Snip off any yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves—they’re not helping your plant and can attract pests.

3. Thin out overcrowded stems—especially in bushy plants like tomatoes, basil, or squash. You want light and air to flow through the center of the plant.

4. For tomatoes, remove the little “suckers” that grow in the crotch between the main stem and a branch. These steal energy from fruit production.

5. For herbs like basil, pinch off the top few inches above a set of leaves to encourage bushier, fuller growth.

When to prune?

Start early, when the plant is small—it’s easier and less stressful for the plant.

Prune in the morning when plants are well-hydrated and the heat isn’t intense.

The goal is always balance: more airflow, more light, and a stronger, more focused plant.

Before you buy bags of mulch—here’s a free option worth checking out👇🏼

We’ve been looking into using wood chips as mulch for our garden beds and walkways this year—and the more we learn, the more it just makes sense.

Wood chips help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and slowly build up soil health as they break down. They’re also great for garden paths—keeping things tidy and reducing muddy spots around the beds.

One cool resource we’ve come across is getchipdrop.com—a site that connects you with local arborists to deliver wood chips right to your space. It’s a bit of a wildcard on timing and volume, but if you’re planning ahead and have room to work with, it looks like a great option to explore.

Follow as we prep and plan our garden this season—there’s a lot we’re trying for the first time, and we’ll be sharing it all as we go.

Cilantro bolts fast—but that doesn’t mean you have to live without it.👇🏼

The trick?
Succession planting.
Instead of planting one big batch, plant small amounts every 2–3 weeks. That way, when one round bolts, another is just coming up.
More cilantro. Less frustration.
