It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Ivan Bygrave, age 58, a master plumber, legendary storyteller, and devoted family man, who passed away at Lisaard House in Cambridge on Sunday, March 22/2026,
surrounded by his loved ones after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Mike’s life was defined by hard work and the deep bonds he formed along the way. His career in the plumbing industry began before he had his driver's license. At 16 years
old, his boss partnered him with John Oliveira. The two spent their weekends driving around together, installing many water heaters. Mike would teach John English, and they would learn the trade from the ground up. Over four decades, they became a fixture in the community. In 1997, that partnership reached a milestone when they co-founded CJ’s Express Plumbing and Heating Ltd, a business built on their skills, honesty, and straightforward nature.
In a poignant turn of fate, Mike spent his final days at Lisaard House —a place where he and John had once worked as young plumbers for their former employer, helping to install the very pipes and systems that provide comfort to so many.
Little did he know then that this peaceful sanctuary, which he helped build with his own hands, would eventually be the
place where he would take his last breath, surrounded by the same care and dignity he had worked to provide for others.
While Mike was a plumber by trade, he was a chef and entertainer by heart. Whether he was perfecting a new recipe to share or fixing a leak, Mike’s real specialty was his spirit. He was a man who always had a story to tell and a joke
to crack, ensuring that no one ever left his side without a sore jaw from laughing. Beyond his professional legacy, Mike was the heart of his family. He was a devoted Spouse to Betty and an amazing father to all his children and grandchildren. He taught his family that a life well-lived required hard work. He adored and lived for the moments spent sharing a home-cooked
meal and attending his grandchildren’s events.
He will be forever missed..
