What started as a simple idea — a dining table to fit a specific space — turned into something far more beautiful than we ever imagined.

As a rough carpenter for many years, stepping into the finer side of woodworking was completely new territory for me. I didn’t have all the tools or the knowledge, and honestly wasn’t sure I was even capable of completing a live edge table.

After selecting the base and finishing the top, it was time to bring the two together — an experience in itself. The base wasn’t stable until it was secured to the top, and even then it needed a little extra support to eliminate some vibration and prevent shifting. Metal rods (not shown in the picture) fixed this problem. It was a known issue so the rods themselves blended well with the aesthetic.

But it all came together.

Made as a wedding gift for a good friend, this piece has proven to last — standing the test of time for over 10 years and still going. 🪵

Can’t help myself 😅
I have a habit of mostly posting finished pieces. Only recently, I’ve started filming myself working and trying to show the process. It becomes more difficult with limited time and space in which to store all the raw footage. Something im working towards as well.

Curly birch coffee table-🌳
One of my first table builds and some pictures from the building process. This was roughly 10 years ago. There’s plenty of ways to build. At the time I used what knowledge and tools i had to get the job done. A great way to learn is to go through the process over and over until it becomes second nature.

I never imagined working the trades as a kid growing up. It’s something I always felt i could fall back on since my dad had been framing his entire life. It was hard and I’ll admit at times it sucked. It was however the best path for me moving forward. As time went on I began to appreciate the trade and what it had to offer. In that time it lead me to woodworking and I haven’t looked back since.

A little behind the scenes ➡️
From the selection of the wood, in this case, teak. To the outline and rough cut of the overall shape itself. There are many stages in the process.

Once I cut out most of the waste I’ll then use a knife and gouging tools to further shape the spoon. After a majority of the spoon is complete I’ll finally sand the rest smooth. Then ill burnish the wood for an even smoother almost reflective surface. The last part involves me applying mineral oil to really make the wood grain pop.

Create a simple, non-toxic wood stain by dissolving fine steel wool in white vinegar for 3–7 days, forming an iron acetate solution. For best results, strain the mixture, apply to high-tannin woods like oak, and apply multiple coats for a darker, weathered, or ebonized look.
Prep the Solution: Use fine steel wool for faster dissolution and less debris. Place one pad in a Mason jar, fill with white vinegar, and leave the lid loose to allow gas to escape.
Let it Brew: While it works in 24 hours, a 3–7 day soak produces a better, darker stain.
Tannin Booster: This stain works best on woods high in tannins (oak, walnut). For low-tannin woods (pine, maple), wash the wood with strong brewed black tea first to ensure it turns dark instead of just gray.
