3 things you might not know about tiny homes šŸ‘‡

1. ā€œTiny homeā€ and ā€œARUā€ aren’t exactly the same thing.
In Ontario, a tiny home can be used as an Additional Residential Unit (ARU)—the official planning term. *An ARU is a self-contained dwelling with its own kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area, attached to or separate from the main home.*

2. Cambridge homeowners may be eligible for up to $10,000. šŸ’°
The City of Cambridge offers a one-time grant of up to $10,000 to eligible homeowners who construct an ARU. Eligible costs may include professional permit drawings, water and sanitary service upgrades, construction labour and materials. *Specific eligibility requirements apply, so check the program details before starting.*

3. Start planning early. šŸ—“ļø
Zoning, site considerations, drawings, permits and approvals all need to be addressed before construction begins. Planning ahead helps you understand what your property can accommodate and avoid costly surprises.

A little summer pause šŸ¤

Things will be a little quieter on socials over the next few weeks.

There’s lots happening behind the scenes at Vedder Construction, and I’ll (Cassandra) still be keeping up with our current and upcoming projects. But for these last few weeks of summer, I’m choosing to put a little more of my attention toward home and the kids before school starts.

So, fewer posts. More summer. šŸ¤

We wanted to take a moment and honour someone who taught us so much about life in the short amount of time he was in our lives.
Our brother-in-law, Jon, passed away 2 years ago. He was a light in our family, and we miss him deeply. When we told him we were going to take the leap of faith and start Vedder Construction, he couldn’t have been more excited for us. That meant so much to us in a time of such a large life transition and uncertainty.
Jon knew how to love on others. The way he spoke, how he spent his time, and most of all, how he treated people- even when he was dealing with complex medical issues for a year and a half. He showed us that choosing joy in suffering is not impossible (PTL šŸ™ŒšŸ¼), and most of all, ENJOY life.
Sometimes we get caught up in our day-to-day, the grind, working hard, and the demands of life. This isn’t a bad thing, but something that needs balance- to slow down, enjoy quality time with those you love, turn off the distractions and channel our inner Jon.
We miss you, Jon. Happy heaven day. šŸ¤
P.S. Jon received many blood transfusions throughout his medical journey. Those donations helped keep him alive and gave his body what it needed to heal enough to go home from the hospital at many different points. We will always be incredibly grateful for the people who took the time to donate blood and care for him while in hospital.
If you’re able, we want to encourage you to book a blood donation today in honour of Jon. ā¤ļø
Give blood. You never know whose life you might be helping save. 🩸

Waterloo Regional Police recently shared a reminder about contractor scams. ā€¼ļø

Before you hire someone to work in your home, here are a few things every homeowner should know. šŸ‘‡

Whether you hire Vedder Construction or another contractor, our hope is the same: that you hire someone you can trust!

1. Know who’s coming into your home

Ask who will be working on your project, whether they’re employees or subcontractors, and who your main point of contact is.

2. Verify they’re a legitimate business

A reputable contractor should be able to provide a registered business name, liability insurance, and WSIB coverage (if applicable).

3. Read their Google reviews

Don’t just look at the star rating—read what people say about communication, quality, reliability, cleanliness, and how problems were handled.

4. Ask for references

Speak to past clients. Ask whether they’d hire them again, how communication was, and whether they were happy with the final result.

5. Check their website and online presence

Look for a professional website, recent project photos, clear contact information, and an active online presence.

Trust is built before construction begins.

Whether you choose Vedder Construction or another contractor, we hope these tips help you hire with confidence.

Your home deserves quality workmanship.

Your family deserves someone you can trust. šŸ”

Our business isn’t who we are—it’s what we do.

Our kids will one day choose their career path. But this is the one we’ve chosen, and we genuinely love it.

So when Eli asked for a construction-themed birthday party, we couldn’t help but bring a little bit of the job site home.

It was a fun reminder that while we build houses every day, it’s the life that happens *inside them that matters most.*

Kids look up to their parents. If ours remember anything, we hope it’s not just that we built homes—it was that we worked hard, loved what we did, and always tried to put people first.

Happy Birthday, Eli! šŸ’™

And the winner is…
šŸ† CAMDEN! šŸŽ‰

Safe to say… never underestimate the new guy. šŸ˜…šŸ‘

We had our crew take on the viral 12-inch tape measure challenge, and while years of experience definitely count on the jobsite, this round belonged to our Carpenter’s Assistant, Camden!

A little friendly competition keeps things fun, but what we’re most thankful for is the incredible team behind Vedder Construction. šŸ™

It’s a privilege to work alongside a team that’s committed to quality craftsmanship, honest work, and serving our clients well.

Congratulations, Camden! šŸ‘
