As cooling season comes to an end, it’s easy to think the job is done. But post-season cleaning and inspection are just as important as preparing your tower for summer. Once the tower has finished working hard all season, it’s a great time to take a closer look at its condition and address issues before they become bigger problems.

🔎 A post-season inspection can identify:
• Damaged or deteriorated fill
• Worn belts, pulleys, and bearings
• Cracked or damaged fan blades
• Deteriorated drift eliminators
• Corrosion or damaged hardware
• Leaking or deteriorated seals and casing
• Debris and buildup in the basin and water distribution system

💧 What Is Cooling Tower Fill — And Why Does It Matter?
Ever look inside a cooling tower and wonder what all those layers of black plastic are actually doing? 👀
That’s cooling tower fill — and it plays a HUGE role in how efficiently your tower cools water. 🏭💦
💧 So, what is cooling tower fill?
Fill is the material inside the tower that increases the surface area available for water and air to interact.
As warm water flows down over the fill, air moves through it. This creates more contact between the water and air, allowing heat to transfer out of the water and helping the cooling tower do its job. 🌬️💦
Think of it as creating a large surface area for cooling — the more effective the contact between air and water, the better the heat transfer.
⚠️ Why does the condition of the fill matter?
Over time, cooling tower fill can become:
🟠 Scaled — mineral deposits restrict water flow and reduce heat transfer.
🦠 Fouled — biological growth and debris can interfere with airflow and water distribution.
💥 Damaged or deteriorated — broken, warped, or collapsed fill can create poor water distribution and reduce tower performance.

⚠️ A Timely Reminder About Cooling Tower Maintenance
CBC has reported a recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Toronto has been linked by public health officials to a cooling tower at the TTC’s Hillcrest Complex. This is an important reminder for facility managers and cooling tower operators: proper cooling tower maintenance and water management are critical. Legionella bacteria can multiply in poorly maintained man-made water systems, including cooling towers. People can become infected by breathing in small aerosolized droplets containing the bacteria.

So what should facility managers be thinking about?
🔹 Regular inspections — Identify deterioration, fouling, corrosion and other conditions that can affect tower performance.
🔹 Water management — Proper treatment, testing and monitoring are essential components of Legionella risk management.
🔹 Equipment condition — Nozzles, fill, drift eliminators, basins and other components all play a role in proper tower operation.
🔹 Cleaning & maintenance — Follow manufacturer recommendations and applicable industry practices for maintaining cooling tower systems.

When was the last time you looked at how your maintenance team actually gets to the roof — and moves around once they're there?
