Macadamization of Merivale Road, spring/summer 1926. The view is looking south from the approximate present-day location of Merivale Road and Woodfield Drive.

A precursor to modern asphalt, this road-building method was developed by Scottish engineer John Loudon McAdam. It involved laying and compacting successive layers of crushed stone, typically shaped with a slight crown to improve road drainage. A binding layer of fine stone dust—and later tar, as shown here—was often added to reduce dust and help hold the surface together.
